Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

I’m no fan of Musk, but our “leaders” should learn from a few of his rules…

  1. Musk has asked staff to cut down on the number of meetings they hold, writing: “Excessive meetings are the blight of big companies and almost always get worse over time.” WFC managers wastes unlimited time holding unproductive ritualistic meetings to exert control over employees, and to attempt to validate their worth to their own higher-ups.
  1. He also said staff should be able to walk out of meetings that they don’t feel are valuable, explaining: “It is not rude to leave, it is rude to make someone stay and waste their time.” “Please get [out] of all large meetings, unless you’re certain they are providing value to the whole audience, in which case keep them very short.” Townhall anyone??? Narcissistic political-speak BS, false promises from out-of-touch leaders, softball questions….
  1. Employees must also be as ‘direct’ as possible and not ‘use acronyms or nonsense words for objects, software, or processes’. WFC would fall apart without their acronyms and abbreviations. How many times do you have to decode which department/division a document is referring to? I have personal knowledge of a department who did not want to change it’s name in order for it to better describe it’s current function because the new name wouldn’t result in a good acronym. True story.
  1. Still on the communication front, Musk has advised staff to avoid speaking through a ‘chain of command’ and instead approach a person directly. The billionaire wrote: “Communication should travel via the shortest path necessary to get the job done. Any manager who attempts to enforce chain of command communication will soon find themselves working elsewhere.” Chain of command and hierarchy are demanded at WFC, in even when it most often leads to a breakdown in communication.
  1. Also another key rule for the Tesla founder is common sense, such as not ‘following a company rule that is obviously ridiculous in a particular situation’. Our HR Dept is founded on ridiculous rules and policies, even when we are sued and fined for them.

Agreed. They’re lazy and should go work at McDonalds.

Anyone who is not a fan of Musk is a floater who hates to be held accountable and who hates to work hard.
Lots of those types around here these days. No work ethic and lots of feelings of entitlement.

Therein lies the conundrum. How can we be "Agile" without all those meetings, rigid communications chains, byzantine processes, and "stay in you lane or else" edicts from management.....?

Yes, lazies

To build something great, hard work is required. This is true whether people like it or not. Twitter is great, but unfortunately hasn’t been profitable. Hard work is required to change that. Can’t just rely on investor handouts permanently.

"lazies"? Seriously? Musk's ultimatum of "long hours at high intensity" or leave wasn't a challenge. It was a tyrant move.

Elon is a billionaire with multiple successful companies. The people resenting his rules for MAKING a company successful are and always will be pawns because of their lack of work ethic, bad attitude, lack of integrity, and they provide no value add.
I have a family member that has worked with Elon for 25 years - he is very well compensated, loves his job and his boss, is a multi-millionaire due to company stock share purchases in Elon's companies ...... Stop complaining and get to work

A lot of what the people at Twitter are doing really is actively collaborative. Some jobs at WF are as well, but many are not. That's the problem with the faux-blanket policy. This exec team doesn't have the skill to effectively manage this, and they don't trust the actual managers to handle it either. So here we are with a policy that often makes no sense, and the problems are compounded when the execs lie about the situation and try to sell us S sandwiches as meatball subs.

Musk basically just told employees they were gonna have to start working hard or else they had to leave. A ton of them didn’t like that so they left and were paid for three months instantly. Doesn’t sound like too bad of a move to me. Musk got to get rid of any who didn’t want to buy in to making Twitter profitable, and the lazies got 3 months instantly paid. Win for both parties.

A few pearls of logic doesn't offset the damage EM is doing to his company. Employees were given 24 hours to commit to long hours at no pay increase or 3 months severance. Oh, and RTO. Is that what you want Chuckie to do?

I promise you all that Chuckie is admiring every move Elon has made to cut employees and get them to resign. He’s probably whining to whoever will listen about the fact that he can’t do that at Wells.

All these responses are missing the point....Just like the meetings that the OP mentions, they lack a point. I skip most of the meetings that I'm invited to, and for the others I will reply back asking for an agenda. I love (heavy on the sarcasm) getting on meetings and listening the the managers chew their food, or being forced watch them edit an excel spreadsheet while they waste their entire teams time.

OP’s headline is that he/she is no fan of Musk. Try to keep up.

All the people praising Musk are basically saying "I want to be overworked like a slave for some reason."

Maybe apply for a Twitter job then? Relocate if necessary.

I really think Musk should be the next CEO of WF. I’d like to see him send the stage coach off a cliff.
