Unfortunate experiences that others have went through have taught me that it's more important to work smart than it is to work hard. However, I've noticed that people are now starting to desperately rely on very hard work in order to try to save their jobs, although everyone more or less knows that it is better to be focused on looking for a job that actually appreciates you.

I know plenty of smart att workers who work hard. generally their lives move along trouble free
I really don't care how much you work and nor should your manager. I never understood this concept of 8 hour work days anyway. I am supposed to give a certain amount of time? Why don't we figure out what the job is. If I am completing the requirements of the job, then I am doing the job. If I do the job with little to no defect, I am doing the job well. If I show mastery in the position, I should be promoted as those slots are made available. In other words, how long it takes me to do the job shouldn't matter, so long as I am meeting the requirements and metrics of the job.
Do little work and show it so your supervisor can have a good night sleep when he/she chooses you to be laid off. None of this is easy on anyone. But you will make it easier on them by showing you don’t care to stay.

The opposite for me. Since they’ve been chopping benefits, pay, vacation days etc.. I’ve been working less. Maybe 35 hours a week now. All at home.
Just do enough to stay out of trouble. If they are gonna lay you off there is nothing you can do about it. Call it quiet quitting if you want but I’m not giving anymore than I have to any company. Life is too short!

Honestly it doesn't matter work hard or work smart. Leadership gives percentage headcount reduction borders and management has to tow the line in some cases entire groups are eliminated.
Working class folks at corporations in 2020 is all about understanding the temporary nature of your corporate gig and not getting complacent and thinking job security is a thing.
