Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Hot-desking Hypocrisy

Hot-desking Hypocrisy (Forbes)

‘Many companies resist the idea that employees should work from home. While this is a 19th-century idea, the argument can be made that if you have a tightly knit work team, then insisting everyone comes to the office can help drive efficiency.

But when you hot-desk, you might as well be at home as being in the office. Seriously, apart from the cost of electricity, what’s the difference? Probably not much.

So any employer who demands the attendance in the office but also only offers hot-desks would seem to be talking both ways at once.’

@3ggx That’s not what’s up for discussion guy.

Someone stated, incorrectly, that Indians in India are “stealing” American jobs. That is false. American jobs are being given to them by the same rich, white, republican men that most people making such a complaint are likely to either support or aspire to be like.

You’re barking up the wrong branch of the wrong tree in the wrong forest.

Having worked with tons of coworkers based in India, they are not capable of critical thought. They only follow process and shut down when there is a deviation and then have me fix the problem, which happens constantly

@2zhv

Nobody is “stealing” jobs.

Your white, Republican boss is giving them away to undercut your bargaining power.

The employees that are in India etc and stealing American jobs think they are bad A's now but just wait, this can flip on them in a heartbeat and they will be the ones being dumped! Look at all of the TECH layoffs currently and hoe many of those are people working here on Visas that will whiplash them back where they belong if they can't find employment fast enough. What goes around comes around and Americans are only going to tolerate outsourcing for so long before laws are enforced to limit it. So go ahead and gloat. Americans will have the last laugh and Exxonmobil will be stopped from giving away our jobs and hurting the American economy. Their massive incomes alone don't keep the American economy afloat. Arrogance will catch up with them. Think AMERICAN!

Addition to SLO comment. Best place in the country! To add clarity to your observations, many places in the country have organized local unions or associations for the FIELD employees which prohibits salaried employees from touching anything in the field. So you would NOT see an engineer MPT doing anything physical. That would violate the agreement with the company put in place to protect hourly employees from having their jobs stolen by MPT employees. Even more so to prevent accidents from their lack of field knowledge and experience. These are facts, I worked in a field with this type of agreement. We need something to protect us against outsourcing our jobs and stop the abuse of American employees! Stop the steal!!

@1bog If what you’re saying is true, then your position in this discussion has no rational basis.

Resentfulness for its own sake? Hardly the best use of one’s time IMO.

Be well sir.

to do a job that requires ... physical labor. If true<

Not true, as far as I saw.

I worked as a 'month on / month off' field engineer (BSME, Cal State, SLO) for +35 years. In all those years I never once did any physical labor on the job site; nor did I ever see any other EM field engineers do physical labor; unless you count writing EM well construction procedures, QA/QC on-site work or running to and from the drill floor / bridge as 'physical labor'. It was stressful work for sure but not physical. Also, as the EM on-site Drill Super, the contractor (Transocean, Nabors, Saipem, Diamond or Maersk, etc.) would never let me operate on-site drilling equipment due to insurance and skill issues.

Anyway, EM paid me way too much (topping out at +$350K/yr ) to spend my 30 day hitch doing physical labor that was assigned to the drilling contractor.

After retiring from EM 2016, I'm still not doing physical labor. I pay others to do physical around my ranch, ha!

Good luck!

@uya Machine learning, actually. Though I am proficient with Excel (who isn’t?).

“Field Engineer”

Of course…

Taking your comments at face value, it seems you’ve put yourself through the trouble of going to college only to do a job that doesn’t require a degree and requires physical labor. If true, this is likely the source of your resentment.

I will be enjoying holidays, thank you. I wish you the same.

This fits the companies view of employees. Fungible and on a yearly contract so why give us a proper work space.

: @yhc+1jNbZj09 very true. Covid scared corporates because they lost their control. Postcovid they are now even more controlling, demonstrated by Musk and similar. Divide and conquer is a strategy as old as the hills that works due to human greed. Almost none are conscious they are being played, which is easy when society encourages the masses to stay asleep.

@hsk Must be the same guy.

Jobs have been going to India (and Malaysia, Philippines, et. al.) for the better part of the past two decades. It has nothing whatsoever to do with WFH.

The work being outsourced is low-level/low-quality knowledge work (ex. IT support).

Again, had you attended a college and spent a significant portion of your career performing knowledge-based work, you would know this.

I think a lot of people are just jealous of knowledge workers who can earn a good living from anywhere. They’re right to be: it’s a fantastic lifestyle. I’ll be working from Barcelona over the winter holidays. A bit nicer than Baytown, TX I would think.

@hdg+1jNbZj09 cute attempt. I bet you specialize in excel and powerpoints. Good on you. Unlike you I'm on the field not as a "manly work" but as a field engineer. Not all college degree demand you sitting on a chair most of the time. Glad your amazing deduction abilities are at work at ITAR/EAR.

Happy holidays clown

There’s so much hate and character cutting. It’s really vicious and sad. Tragically, I think EM breeds this kind of hostile “survivalist” mentality that so many of these threads are dripping with.

Does anyone realize when they are turning in to an as----e? And what justifies continuing it?

Guess I’d rather be kind than be “right.” Hope anyone reading this has a genuinely happy holiday season and your spirit feels peace & love - and you are a vehicle to bring that light in to the world. God knows we need more of it.

I support an aggressive migration to work from home because I believe all jobs that can be done by from home can also be worked from INDIA. I support an aggressive migration of jobs TO INDIA and cutting ALL the high cost positions in EU and US. Only jobs like refinery and field jobs where people must report to a site should remain. Out of 7000 jobs on the Houston Campus...This can be cut down to about 1000. This could save a couple billion a year. Then we can raise the dividend and give good pay raises to those who remain with the company.

@gix Wow, I was right. I’m good.

Anyway, don’t worry your pretty little head about me. I left O&G some time ago and my current role is subject to ITAR/EAR, so it’s not going to be outsourced. Remote too. That’s what happens when you go to college.

Enjoy the holiday season!

@jkz Yeah, because manual labor has never been outsourced ever.

I guess your point was something along the lines of “Us real men who do manly work blah, blah…”. Well, you made your point. Here’s mine: I can take my college degree(s) and jump industries to one where US Citizenship is a requirement, and…wait for it…not be outsourced.

Enjoy the holidays.

If you sit and need a desk for most of your work. It can easily be outsourced.

@teo, I never thought of it that way but you are right!

Are desks even needed; seriously, really?

Why don’t we just meet up in our cars in the parking lot with our iPhones. That way the buildings could be used for more productive things like, say, meetings. Just a thought.

I am old enough to remember when we all had a proper office (yes, I am a boomer). They took away the office and moved us into cubicles which was a pain but we mostly adjusted. Now they are taking away the desk, eeerrr!!, What is next and when does it end? As long as there are company leaders making bonus money off these ‘cost savings’ moves it won’t.
