Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

How can forecasts be so far off? Who is held accountable?

In Jan, Mr. Gelsinger said that he expected PC demand to remain strong. He dismissed the quarter over quarter declines as being partially related to supply chain and didn't even mention the possibility demand would weaken. He also said Sapphire Rapids would ramp production Q2 2022... now that looks like late this year or early next year.

How could these forecasts be off by so much just a few months beforehand? Did anyone take responsibility? Was anyone let go? Was there a corrective action plan? Crickets. Now big layoffs.

Everyone is bad at predicting the future, including Intel.

The ELT (especially Pat) messed up not catching this, now the employees have to suffer. What’s worse is they have yet to take any responsibility/accountability whatsoever. These layoffs have been completely spineless, basically slashing all budgets and making low level managers deal them out.

Probably time to find a cheaper CEO that can act more realistically and a new ELT that has a better backbone.

They actually thought pandemic demand was a new normal even though the past 12 years showed flat PC growth.

What mo--ns.

Anybody in SMG with half a brain (or any stock analyst with 3/4 of a brain) would tell you PC demand got pulled forward into 2020/2021 as stay at home sales was the huge demand driver. Once all those extra PCs were pulled forward you have to back out some of the demand in your forward estimates.

SO, actually quite easy to forecast.

As for the execution slip... you forecast volume ramp in 5-6 months and then push it out 6-9 month just a few months later. Clearly, the validation results were not on track enough to claim the production ramp.

So, how can this happen? Can anyone give even a mild defense with some actual logic behind it?

But we can take solace in his predictions for the need for new fabs. :D

Pat is just the hapless head of a thoroughly corrupt management chain that lies at every step. Endemic third world corruption leads to banana republic results.

In fairness, pretty much everybody was wrong by the same magnitude.
