Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Connections are almost everywhere more important than a job well done

We all know relationships play a major role when it comes to layoffs here. Those who want to avoid cuts every August and November, do not try too hard to be one of the best employees and instead work on being well connected and in a good relationship with the manager. I'm already preparing for an interview in another company, but tell me, in which company are layoffs not influenced by relationships? Whatever company I've worked in so far, the most important thing was to be a buddy with the manager. When you find a company where this is not the case, please tell me to apply there.

This is absolutely true and I'll take it a step further based on my own personal experience. Being charming and charismatic will take you far in the workplace, especially in a cliquey mean girl corporation like Cisco.

The catch is that it has to be genuine, it can not be an act. People can spot a phony a mile away. Be polite to everybody, smile, and absolutely never engage in any type of gossip whatsoever.

The trick to being charming is to be a genuinely happy person and not to take any of this mumbo jumbo seriously. Droning, pointless jobs are a dime a dozen in this valley, one can easily be replaced with another. Never get personally invested in any role or company, otherwise you end up on the verge of an early heart attack like most of the frequent contributors to this site.

Hard to become buddies with the manager, if you are remote and have no time. Or they have already picked favorites.

Been around since the dawn of time. It is who you know vs. what you know. Either can work, but one does MUCH better than the other. Can let you guess.
