Recently resigned from EMHC (BTW, the Job market is hot) but wanted to share some observations.

Many company Kool-Aid drinkers will say the opposite happens. And yes the MOH system is abused.

But I'd say at least 25% if not more of NI and NSI folks had some form of disability and many supervisors used it to tie to negative PDS reviews.

One of the comments I heard in the pre-rank meetings were "they have too many doctor appointments, are they even going to the doctor?"

Some laughed while I actually said that's not funny and got a weird stare and the meeting carried on. Yet HR told us to not hold pre-rank meetings.

Unfortunately I later found out she was NSI'd and they took the PIL. I would not be surprised if she took some form of legal action.

I chatted with some peers at the refineries and the consensus was that PDS review results had a lot of inconsistencies compared to previous years reviews and really leaned toward behavioral items as a grasping at straws practice to rank someone lower.
I mean after these past couple years who hasn't had some form of behavioral issues!!?

Anyone else have a similar experience?

Yes, that’s the way it works. During my early supervisor years i would always PIP the people that looked like they were better off picking cotton. Working in energy isn’t for everyone and since they were by definition inept, i tried to help by guiding them towards a job that was more suitable for their skill set (ie janitorial positions)

Unfortunately, if she took a PIL, she waived her rights to file a suit... even if there was legitimate discrimination. Sucks that they can get away with it so easily.

Don’t act surprised. Most Conservative leaning folks look down on people with disabilities. They’re “weak”, so to speak.

I’ve participated in at least 30+ rank or PA meetings for various CLs and have never heard this. HR is always present and would never allow it.

Yes, it's true. If you or a family member get any mental health assistance or similar, it will be counted as a deficiency and personal failing on your part. You will get comments anywhere from a disingenuous "how is everything" to let you know they know and are watching to outright snide and snotty comments. Strong EM people don't need that.

Agree. The number of times I have heard men say “Can she do the job with a new baby?”

Well, I don’t know but you certainly don’t know either. Tell her what the job entails and whether she is interested. If she says ‘yes’ then she will handle it just fine.

With health issues, I’ve often seen employees kept for 1 year (rank session) after recovery. Then they are right back in with the pack, but probably still struggling with personal adjustments depending on their diagnosis. In the past, it would have been no issue. But with 8% PIP targets, lower time and focus on the job is suddenly very pertinent.

I was in a rank session and separate discussion on promotion someone to their first supervisor position and in both it was brought up that she was recently married so would likely be having kids in the near future so wasn’t a good match and should drop in ranking.

Men get married and have children and are met with raises and promotions to support their family, women get married and it’s the nail in their career coffin. Gotta love the good ol boys clue.

I agree with the poster that says it’s survival of the fittest and the culture drives us to an early grave or chronic illness.
Perhaps the answer here is not to keep doing more and more and more. Know you limits and set your boundaries.

The people who miss out the most are the ones not looking for other opportunities…I’ve seen 2-3 yr employees right out of school earn more than their division managers ($300-400K+) because their skills were more transferable. This was in emre btw

Not only have I heard something similar in rank sessions, this kind of behavior has become worse in recent years. In fact, along with many other reasons, instances like this drove me to quit recently.

I know that any disability can (and more than likely will be) used against you. If it’s an illness that affects you in any way psychologically, or is psychological, you are screwed.

The truth is XOM is a “survival of the fittest” culture. A small illness here & there is acceptable, but chronic issues that require some compassion and accommodation is another story.

I swear, XOM would rather someone who works themselves to death only to have a heart attack over someone who insists on managing their health and not ki-l themselves for the company.

God forbid if you (or anyone you help care for) have diabetes, depression, lupus, autism, addiction issues, epilepsy, or any other “inconvenient” illness.

I had a boss who constantly came to work sick constantly infecting us all. She’d expect us to “pop a pill” and get to work. If we had too many sick days away from work, she’d reprimand us and give us a speech about expectations.

XOM is not the place to work for anyone who is human, gets sick and needs medical care and health management.

I was in a rank session where the division manager (the rank list owner) wanted to NSI an employee who had a heart attack and missed months of work recuperating from multiple bypass surgeries. I argued vehemently against his plan-and wound up on NSI myself. The cult that we have become where nobody is allowed a dissenting opinion is ridiculously scary and does not bode well for the future.
