I'm at IBM, and today, Apr 4, 2023, I was informed of being laid off. Yes, it is happening at IBM.

GOM === Global Opportunity Marketplace - i.e. internal BrassRing

What does GOM mean? I worked there for 20 years and I've never heard that acronym.

I think IBM really does want to fill the 600+ GOM openings and they can only do so with re-deployed (and self-solicited). Levels 1-3 of mgmt continue to assert "no time limit" and also say "yeah not forever" .... but 1st of Q1 new budgets can mean new jobs and some existing are being tweaked for re-deployed.

So I remain with my conviction that this will all close Q1 - but ALL indicate the need to work through new budgets, jobs, etc. Still fits Feb (think end of Jan) for new jobs and then "take one or (implicit) RA)"

All the GOM jobs are vetted (otherwise ruthless corp would have cancelled) and desired to be filled - internally. Hiring bosses are swamped. A few jobs to come.

That said, as noted, this will all close Q1 - if not for expenses write off even if severance creeps into Q2 - all actions taken by end of March.

The change of Checkpoint. Whatever. If anything it helps the hiring manager by forcing the losing manager to complete work for re-deployment hiring manager.

For all re-deployed all I have to say (esp at Band +- Band 9) is the jobs inside IBM are few good matches - and the jobs outside are plentiful. Indeed anything not fully remote I automatically put on hold. Your long term raise etc awaits you outside. Seriously.

Define Layoff because... IBM is now using "redeployment". They've told people before the end of 2022 that they had been "selected" for redeployment. The effected Employees were then told they should be using this (as of yet undetermined amount of time) to look for another Position. A Few Found some new jobs with SUBSTANTIAL pay increases whiles others were offered positions in areas that were not commutable. Some are still looking. In Mid December; There was another round of "redeployments".... This time; they were ACTUALLY redeployments. Some were selected for Task forces and moved to other departments. Welcome to 2023. We were all told that the Check point reflections (Performance appraisals) Were due on Jan 13 but we have come in Today to find out they have pulled it in to Jan 10. More to come for Employee R/A's this year. We all suspect things to be stirred up quite a bit in 1Q.

2022 end of year layoff has begun.
Some IBMers are told to find a job within IBM within certain time or be chopped.
Some contractors are told 12/31/2022 is their last day.
At least AIX kernel development and support is affected.

IBM has thinned the herd for years via layoffs (essentially justifying the layoffs via saying we no longer need your skill) I suspect IBM has essentially stopped layoffs due to the herd getting too thin. Does that mean IBM will not reduce headcount? NOPE it just means IBM has to find different ways to thin the herd that are more selective (PIP anyone) (how about redundancy) One of the posters below says IBM will be exiting from the channels market. That’s not a layoff, but a sell off. PLEASE note channels has been for sale before, but there were no buyers. Given IBM wants to focus on Enterprises (B toB) and not channels, that may make IBM sweeten the pot for someone to take channels. Channel organizations usually focus on smaller B to C engagements which is 180 degrees out of phase with IBM’s announced Enterprise/Hybrid cloud/Redhat strategy. Time will tell, BUT AK has stated that IBM has moved on from RA’s

Yes, in 2023 they are finally going to get rid of all the useless POS with Channels, Partner, or Alliance in their titles.

They are constantly putting older employees on PIP now and then firing them. If is cheaper than to RA people.
