Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Do managers have power over anything anymore?

Our team used to have pretty strong autonomy which drove thoughtful business decisions around how to serve our clients, with the support of our 2-up and 3-up management.

Over the past year this has changed drastically, we are subject to so many changes in our processes with no value added and cannot get a straight answer or reason from our direct managers on anything. Complete lack of transparency, while our managers are increasingly throwing around “transparency” as a buzzword.

It feels like our managers are being forced to blindly follow the new executives who are making everything up as they go along, the same managers that were highly trusted and well regarded by employees before the new execs came along.

Does anyone who is a manager care to chime in with their perspective on how their autonomy has been impacted under the new regime? I’m aware of the obvious changes such as RTO, performance rankings, etc. but it feels like there is so much more beneath the surface.

I'm in tech and we have no idea what our mgr. does besides forward emails and approve pto. This bothered me for a while, but in all actuality, it's great. No micromanaging, do your job, get paid, done.

We had a great manager who was in position for 15-20 years. We had autonomy relative to other areas. I would have said he did a good job walking the line between doing the right thing for customers and employees vs attempting to keep upstairs happy. Highly ethical. He grew frustrated because he was gradually having his ability to manage his department overridden.

WFC laid him off 18 months ago. He had a couple drinks at his going away party, and said he pushed too hard on one issue and they canned him. That’s what they do! Get rid of the experienced knowledgeable people who still cared, so they can manipulate and control whoever is left.

I’ve been disgusted with the past several managers. What I won’t do is go through the interview process, again. I’ve gotten so used to WFH and quiet quitting, that I’m quite comfortable just collecting that paycheck every couple of weeks. I’m torn between ditching or having hope and waiting for good leadership to come on board.

Truth.
Manager’s managers make changes to ratings and comp decisions without input from the managers that actually know the employees and their work.
Then that manager is forced to change their employees evaluation to match a lower rating and compensation than they deserve. Been that way for years now.

Managers don’t manage anymore at WF. It is the Chase method, been that way there for years.
