Ford Is Building Its First New Auto Plant in 53 Years.

Change is certainly coming to Stanton, about 45 miles northeast of Memphis. Ford and South Korea’s SK broke ground in September on the sprawling, six-square mile manufacturing complex that is due to begin building electric F-Series pickup trucks and the batteries that power them in three years. Known as BlueOval City, the $5.6 billion
compound will eventually teem with nearly 6,000 workers and sp-t out about 350,000 plug-in trucks per year from Ford’s first all-new automotive assembly plant in more than a half century.

BlueOval City is a linchpin in Chief Executive Officer Jim Farley’s $50 billion plan to build 2 million battery-powered automobiles a year by the end of 2026, up from about 63,000 last year. Ford’s push to take on Tesla Inc., which now controls almost three-quarters of the EV market, relies on the factory’s success. But the project has rattled Michigan officials who fear that Ford’s center of gravity is shifting south.

Rural Tennessee offered Ford plentiful land, potentially lower labor costs than the Michigan and $2.4 billion in state government incentives, equal to about $414,000 for each job at BlueOval City. The company also plans two SK battery plants in Kentucky and a research center in Atlanta. Ford’s shift South also unnerves union officials.

The United Auto Workers has no guarantee it will represent BlueOval City’s employees, who must vote to accept the union. Auto workers in Tennessee, a right-to-work state, have already rejected organizing drives by the UAW at Nissan Motor Co. and Volkswagen AG factories. “UAW members are rightly concerned that automakers will take advantage of the EV transition to de-unionize,” UAW Vice President. “More and more automakers and manufacturers have also been funneling investment to the South, where corporations and politicians have staunchly opposed union rights for workers.”

So moving the so called "future" of the company to the southern states, while selling 25 FMC buildings in MI. Is the Ford family throwing the towel at recovering Detroit's downtown too?

At the same time outsourcing the white collar jobs to Mexico, India, Brazil and other "low cost regions", reducing the need for all those Dearborn sites. Are they planning to leave 1 American Rd as the Global Headquarters or will they move it south too? After all, "bosses" should be where the "action" is, to supervise it all.

Probably the company is trying to get rid of the UAW leaches too with this move. UAW inefficiencies are costing FMC a lot of money, from recalls to a higher average active hourly labor cost (around $11 per hour more than other vehicle manufacturers).

It isn't one side or the other. Executive Leadership or UAW. It's a bit of both.

I worked for a non-union auto supplier. The CEO said one thing that really stuck with me. He said 'if your company has a union, it probably did something to deserve it'. I took that to mean that if the company values their labor/workforce and pays them fair/competitive/livable wages and doesn't work them into the ground, the workers are content and far more productive.

I think it is greed at the top - exec leadership and UAW - that has ruined this...

Michigan is a right to work state. Unions are obsolete. Talking about friends and family, only family members are hired. There is no accountability and their quality sucks. Ford should close all their plants in Michigan and move them down south. No one outside the Big 2 1/4 have plants in Michigan, no VW, no Mercedes, No Honda, No Toyota, No Tesla, etc.

Hit a nerve I see. Fact is there are problem employees both hourly and salaried. It will never change the higher ups take care of who they like or who kisses there a-s and the union takes care of the folks paying for there sc--w off time which in most cases is everyday.

@elo+1jZlxV0t I'd agree that Ford management is behind on many of the recalls, because they do NOT listen to the technical advice, and promote ignorant friends/family to positions of responsibility, and force many bad decisions in the company. There are also engineers and white collars employees that don't do their job properly.

However, ignoring the blame from UAW is also getting old. For instance, see NHTSA recall 22V675000. Now, I know the assembly line is full of tough jobs, but people in other states and countries do it too, and better than UAW while getting paid less. No garbage, empty cans or bottles locked in the doors or other places causing rattles and making the vehicle owners go to dealership for a rattle in a new car.

How many times the UAW defends drunk, stoned, and sh---y employees? How many times the UAW reduced automation in the plants to keep jobs? In the best case UAW is full of luddites. In the worst case, The UAW is just a corrupted extortion racket. Do you want me to list here all those UAW "representatives" accused by the prosecutors? It is a fu----g big list. So get down from your high horse and smell the manure.

The blame game is old and needs to go to the curb. Bottom line the good paying jobs are leaving once again for another country that can supply cheap labor either hourly or salaried. The problem is who the he-l can pay what these companies are asking for the vehicles. It will all collapse sooner than latter and that is the facts. This country's is in the toilet more profit for the upper class and turds for the middle and lower class. With out the middle and lower class the upper will have to eat the paper money that will be useless .

The salaried are the cave people sucking the life out of the company. Good try but you know the truth and very afraid your easy meal ticket might be coming to the end. I do wish you luck having to come to work daily and dealing with all the BS the hourly workers deal with. I hear they are hiring for line workers or are you too good for that line of work? Being told when you can use the restroom and take a break.

Selling less than 10,000 EVs per month, Ford won’t need any real estate much longer if all we plan to sell is EVs.

Blaming the UAW is getting old. Salaried needs to look in the mirror and see the problems are caused by them. The UAW does not design, purchase or have any hand in the deals being cut to suppliers of material. Get a life.
