Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Managers Working In Office Only For Show

I enjoy working in the office. I have a very short commute and find that I am more productive when I get out of home. In the last six months I have noticed managers will come into the office, for only an hour or so, and camp out in a conference room. They join a meeting with their senior management in SJ and want the appearance that they are “back in the office” (webex will display if they are in a Cisco conference room). These slimy “leaders” think no one notices their little trick. But it is clear to us engineers who are actually working in the office a few days a week. What a way to lead by example…

the word in RTP is Buildings 10-12 staying, 1-9 closing down.

During their "let's-figure-out-what-we're-doing" period between Nov 7 & the end of Q2, buildings 1 & 2 are the only two staying open since that's the "secure" stuff for S&TO. Building 2 had a lot of custom modifications done to support Government / Federal sales & support. Would be expensive to customize sections of 10 - 12 to move them there, but I guess that makes sense if you they consolidate down to 3 buildings. I would have guessed that it would have been better to get rid of 7 - 12 and move the gym and health center from 9 to one of the buildings 3 - 6.

There's a lot less lab space used in 10 - 12 than there is in 1 - 6. 7 has several data centers on one floor, and the ground floor of 8 has a large percentage of lab space. I'm not sure about 9. There's no lab/DC space on the 1st or 2nd floors, but I'm not sure about floors 3 & 4.

Almost 25 buildings in San Jose were sold, walking around the old campus is a bit creepy. So many layoffs

Is RTP downsizing to less buildings? Or closing everything? Email was vague, and seemed to lean to modernizing some office spaces while closing others. It would seem logical to keep at least a few buildings for team meetings, training events, customer briefing/CPOC, labs, etc. Right now there are 12 buildings with very low occupancy. Interesting contrast that Apple and Google are expanding in RTP while Cisco is contracting. And good luck selling that commercial real estate in a fire sale.

RTP is closed for good. The labs will be powered down in Dec and any valuable h/w will be shipped to India or the Richardson, TX lab. The remaining unwanted h/w will be sent to the scrap yard.

its a house of cards, unfortunately the people who are still there and any good, will have it come down on them. We see your games, its not about performance its about being buddy with your manager or being on video pretending to care.

I come into the office for 19 minutes then I leave for a long lunch followed by walk in the mall. When it's 3pm, I head home.

If you’re outside SJ the reason your entire team hasn’t been laid off is because of the face time your management is putting in.

As a cisco manager, agreed. End of day it does not matter. lets ignore wannabees, those of us who work hard, continue to stay focussed. with my team they have full freedom. not all days mood will be the same, somedays we just get more done, when it matters most we take one for the team. any location is immaterial.
