Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Nike works hard to hide its age discrimination

The layoffs are engineered in such a way that they avoid ageism complaints. For the layoff in 2017 an analysis of the ages of who was let go formed a perfect bell curve. It has age as the median being the exact center between collage graduation day at 22 and retirement at 65. The least were let go at the low and the high end of the age range and the most at the median. The median and average were the same and lent to the perfect symmetry of the curve.

It appears that they decide how many people in each age group need to be let go to achieve this symmetry on the curve and avoid age discrimination suits. Basically, you have to lay off a bunch of younger folks to eliminate the older ones and avoid litigation.

I believe ageism is alive and well at Nike - especially in tech. Proving it is yet another matter.

It has caught up to them but they don't know it....they've not just steiffled innovation, they've ki---d it.
Getting rid of experienced people makes the bean counters happy but costs the company so much more in lost opportunity and there are more failures due to having less experienced people at the helm.
Good luck with the stagnation of innovation...that's where the rot starts.

Same thing happened in 2020. In my area 2 people laid off in their 20’s and 2 people laid off in the their 60’s. Equal amounts for people in their 30’s and 50’s and the highest number in their 40’s. The percentage of those 2 people in their 60’s is way higher than the percentage of those in their 20’s. Super shady

It’s even more complicated than that. Because in addition to age they have to look at gender, ethnicity, and other similar factors to ensure there aren’t any suspect trends - either purposeful or inadvertent - that might be the basis for a discrimination lawsuit.

Sorry to inform you, but the "bell curve" you are describing is just basic demographic statistics playing out in any large enough group.

I just hope all of this will catch up to them one day.
