Ford destroyed Detroit public transportation to force people to buy cars. Ford consistently opposes regional public transportation, again they want people to buy cars. To this day public transportation to/from the suburbs to Dearborn is impractical - you must take buses to downtown Detroit and then buses to Dearborn, then walk across busy freeway to the glass house. Also observe lack of public transport for blue collar workers.
So sure Ford cares deeply about systemic inequities in transport. More likely they want to sell a fleet of untested AV EV vehicles to cities wanting to appear “woke”.
What does this mean?

The quote in the Detroit news story wasn’t addressed in particular to anyone, just from corporate PR release I guess.
Something like this really needs to have details attached for shareholders and stakeholders. Does it mean free electric THINK type scooters to those in need. And Ford can make revenue from the data from an app on the scooter or users phone?
Does it mean a low cost simple car built for the economically disadvantaged? Maybe bring the fiesta back?
We could never build a simple vehicle because marketing had to put their spin on it. Making a respectable profit was unheard of. Never would we design and build without redesign before it was needed. Then ja--ing production around with rental fleets and major rebates all but ki---d resale. Always some other way to fool the rubes who purchased them.
We might try, but cannot build quality vehicles.
