Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Managers setup for failure?

Recently seen managers be assigned personnel who preform jobs the manager has no idea of, and be assigned responsibilities they were not aware of.
What could go wrong.
Some of you know what I’m saying.

" Multiple fails don't bode well for the next one up the chain."

It depends on the goal of the upper management. If the goal is to ensure their subordinates failure then it will only effect the supervisor positively.

They switch them around after laying off a big portion of their group. Had a chance being a L2 Manager but was a L2 self contributor with no direct reports and didn't want to go there. Having the job of laying people off in your group year after year must really take a toll. I had Mangers that had to surplus 3 or 4 people in the group and after they were done on the same day got surplussed self. Really sad situation what is going.

This scenario typically occurs as part of a reorg and termination process. The process involves targeting employees for termination and sweeping them to a temporary holding org. The employees continue performing their current role but report to the new manager. Neither the employee or manager typically have any idea that the entire org structure is temporary and the limb of this tree will be cut down. Timelines to commence terminations vary but are typically three months on average. During this time others may be performing a parallel role, receiving some of your work, and even job shadowing as a new face showing up to meetings.

One thought, from a manager...

If a manager fails hard enough, the next manager up also fails. An occasional underling failing affects only the "failee". Multiple fails don't bode well for the next one up the chain.
