Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Planned office closures and headcount reductions

The bank will be taking many opportunities to reduce headcount, focussed on higher paid staff with longer tenures and located in offices away from regional HQs. Lower merit and bonus payments is one tool as is performance measurement forced on a bell curve, with "lower" performers being offboarded with limited severance. Most staff based at home will be offboarded unless they can commute to an office.

The number of hired interns will continue to increase and be used to backfill positions that cannot be offshored to Poland or India. This is the model that Goldmans employed a number of years ago.

Unfortuntely, this is now part of the Bank's culture and DNA.

The office closures and changes that will be announced include (sorry for being blunt):

  1. Edinburgh to close - no, or very limited, relocation of staff
  2. Pittsburgh to be downsized - announcement made to exit 500 Grant street
  3. Wexford and Cork to close and be absorbed into Dublin - no, or very limited, relocation of staff and opportunity to reduce headcount
  4. Wellesley and other Boston area locations to close and move to One Boston Place - opportunity to reduce headcount and floorplan
  5. Manchester to expand to take further roles from London and limited number from Edinburgh
  6. Poole to close albeit not immediately

Yes, Todd was but he was only there to calm shareholders after Bob Kelly and the street was comfortable and familiar with Todd and his messaging. But soon we realized how badly employees sc--wed us by loafing at home.

You cannot understand Robin Vince until you understand the spoiled slacking workforce which Todd handed to Robin Vince.

US redundancy package..here, you need to side step the land mines set out by Robin. Miss a training course by 1 day? Terminated for cause, no package for you!

Yes, Todd was generous through WFH COVID, but we were all aware that productivity cratered as the COVID era continued.

Don’t believe it? Witness the mass anti-RTO Refusenik problem which has destroyed the Bank.

Robin is going to get his Bank back. Grow up.

@ps

Of course they’re ok with MDs working from home.

MDs are proven to have a strong work ethic and proven productivity from home.

In other words, exactly the opposite of the posters here who disappear at every opportunity. Management is well aware of our rapidly growing Slacker population.

I’ve been told the target for any dept is 3% or less BAH. I can’t say that’s 100% true but what I’ve been told .

& to another posters point- they seem ok with D & MD’s BAH, but not us peons

@mp+1….
“ the Company doesn’t want anyone BAH and they’ll be the first to go”. I’ll believe it when I see it. Check MySource from the top down - you will quickly lose count of the BAH at D and above.

Sounds right. If you are designated as a based at home employee, start looking now because the Company doesn’t want anyone BAH and they’ll be the first to go. Hard to not take it personally after many years with the company, no doubt. But that’s the truth and it’s a business decision they’ve made. I wish them well, but I’m not waiting around and you shouldn’t either if you’re in that position.

Westborough is on the list unfortunately. I’m saddened to say that we will soon be told we need to go to Boston. If we cannot or do not go the company will consider that a resignation. It’s a win, win for them because they get you off the books and don’t have to pay the severance. EVERYONE should be actively pursuing other opportunities. Our jobs as we know them will not be around much longer. Don’t get caught off guard. Explore new opportunities sooner rather than later.

“ Most staff based at home will be offboarded unless they can commute to an office.”

Does this apply to senior management, or just the rest of us peons who would be hurt the most by commuting costs and lower quality of life?

@df+1jj2h869w I never heard of a Pennington office. I thought everyone from KOP had to go to Wilm.

Is the news about Pennington confirmed? There are quite a few work here from former KOP offices. For them commuting to NYC or JC is going to be a monumental waste of time (2+ hr one way) for 3 or 4 or 5 day a week routine.

How is the Sr Management - who are BAH category - are treated?

I understand that is a mechanism to get rid of people.

Contractor and remote - unfortunately, yes. But probably more of a case of not renewing your contract. Contractor rates drain the bank big time.

Any risk if working as contractor remotely? My location is Pittsburgh but never visited it. Working remotely only

The Manchester increase is not a surprise. This location has been pushed for many, many years with most of the staff at this location thinking their shxt don’t stink! Difficult to work with because they feel the are superior to the US employees.

Manchester has just signed a lease on a new HQ, with staff due to move mid 2026. In the Dec town hall it was revealed that the headcount will increase from approx 2200 to 3500-3700.
