Confessions of an AVP

Being chosen for this role has been a financial bo-m for me. Increased bonuses, a salary I never dreamed of and more stock options than I ever imagined. I used to be an L2 like most of you, so how did I get here? I took advantage of the incompetence above me by being the helping hand that saved my VP’s a$$.

We have all seen it and we all complain about it because the incompetence is real. The problem is that the tables are often reversed as your supervisor takes advantage of your skillset and pawns your hard work off as their own. You need to turn the tables ack around like I did.

Pick a problem or pet project to volunteer for. Your supervisor will usually present the opportunity to you during a status calls in the form of a struggle or pressure they are experiencing. Take on the task but make sure it is something where the solution will not be easy to explain. This way you will become his tag-a-long when he presents the solution to his superiors. Example: They will present a set of guidelines for the organization to reduce cloud costs. After they kick off the presentation they will turn it over to you because they will not be able to go into the required details or field questions.

Remember that for each level above you the incompetence is greater and the delegation opportunities are more abundant. If you don’t land a promotion, keep trying with another activity. In the very least you will be given additional connection rewards and higher raises. Also remember that they are old and looking for someone to do their job on a regular basis to make their remaining time here easier. It’s like taking candy from a baby.

This is the right advice, and specifically finding a way to make sure you have to be present to explain it. My old boss would leave me out of those discussion because he would always be very inquisitive to understand my solutions himself. I thought I was being a good worker by keeping him so close and in the loop, but when it came time to present, and I was not invited, it became clear for me.

"Yup my director’s job has zero appeal."

And all the culture is completely dictated from the very top. No real opportunity to create your own culture on the team.

This is spot on. Issue I have is. Most bosses are bad. Steal your ideas and use you. So I say instead of giving answers, say nothing. When everyone lets the upper management come up with an answer. Then it becomes clear that they don’t have any good solutions . My boss can’t step in and do my job. The companies practice that a Manager just needs to manage people is what is causing the fall of AT&T.

Most of us just DGAF anymore and we just want to be laid off soon.

“ I would never want to be a VP here. The constant state of stress and panic and impending doom isn’t worth the extra money. Plus the hours typically su-k.”

Yup my director’s job has zero appeal. Nonstop meetings, emergencies, pointless decks and so forth. Sure they make a little more money but who needs the BS and the money isn’t that spectacular. If I want to work like a corporate attorney I want to be paid like that at least.

Good advice but this is something most of us already know.

The people who work the projects receive the recognition, the high ranking, the best raise, and the connection awards.

I know because me too, but it’s a lot of work and I hate giving presentations. I do it anyway.

Good advice actually. I would add if you find there was no connection award or anything extra to go with the hard work, find another boss. This is the tell. If your boss won’t recognize you for going above and beyond, you know they took all the credit. If this happens, find a new boss. Otherwise you’ll get stuck doing some pet project that your boss will take all the credit for. I speak from experience here. Good bosses recognize their people, bad bosses take the credit and marginalize your work.
