Does promoting a buddy hurt team motivation?

Does promoting a colleague who is seen as overly agreeable affect the motivation of others in the team?

It all hinges on her bust size.

My boss will certainly promote or not layoff one of the buddies in his click. The team bully certainly is safe. He puts pressure on the boss in exchange to let the boss be his sidekick.

I have a colleague who went from a P4 to a P5 with only a small raise and double the work. Be careful what you wish for.

We have a training about this... you have to promote the most qualified and senior resource. If the most senior is not contributing as much as the 2nd more senior, they should get the promotion.

Seniority and contribution are the main factors. If your manager is not really interested in your responsibilities, or cannot accurately tell someone outside the team what you do... you're probably not getting promoted until you hit a paywall for your title in your salary band.

I had a team mate that everyone liked, went above and beyond every time, he got promoted very quickly. My manager was tracking everything they did, and I saw them in 1-on-1 meeting every other day. Other team mates (including me) stayed in the same position for multiple years.

Firstly, if your manager likes you, you will be promoted very fast. If your manager hates you, you will never ever get promoted no matter what and you might even get laid off fast. You might ask why your manager would hate you if he/she had hired you in the first place. Remember, every time there is a company reorg, your good manager goes to somewhere else, and a new and mean manager comes to your team.

Secondly, every team has those brown-nosers who lick their manager's boots every single day. They were born to do those things since high school. You just can't avoid those types no matter where you go.

Thirdly, many corrupt managers always choose tall handsome guys or young pretty girls to promote. Those kind of managers are everywhere, you just can't avoid them.

Conclusion: Hard work doesn't mean anything. It's all about favoritism and politics.

IDGAF either. I know its the norm to promote "friends" who boost evil narcissists egos. I just want my raise and bonus back and not be micromanaged.

Only for those who worry about others. IDGAF. My motivation is completing the tasks I have so I can collect a paycheck. IDGAF about what anyone else.

It’s a lot more stress free focusing on what I can control than getting upset over and worrying about things I cannot.
