Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Never seen it this bad

I've been in this line of work for over a decade, and it’s never felt like this. People who barely say two words to each other are suddenly swapping job leads like it’s a group project. Everyone’s got one foot out the door, and nobody’s even trying to hide it.

"It is all just excuses for why you are a spineless company man."

Ha! I definitely am not a "company man". I'm working my plan to vacate T.

If words are hard for you, I'll simplify it:

@d5+1jm98fhmy is wrong.

Hopefully that is understandable for you.

So try to keep up

No one is reading your wall-of-text sematic argument that has f-all to do with what we are discussing. It is all just excuses for why you are a spineless company man.

"Hogwash. It is almost completely linear."

You don't know what you are talking about. There are different pensions for people based on what company hired you. For example, if you were hired by SBC, your pension gains a lot of value at MR75. My supervisor that was just let go has one of these pensions and it doubled in value at MR75. If you were hired by Cingular, there's no gain at MR75. I don't know about those hired by BellSouth or AT&T (pre-merger). And then there's all of the people that were hired later that don't have a pension at all. Important note - I'm talking pension, not 401k. There are also different pensions and different payouts for represented (aka union) and non-represented (aka "managers").

There's almost nothing at AT&T, even RTO, that you can make a blanket statement about.

For example, there are 9 hubs for AT&T, but only 4 for ATS (Legg org). So AT&T is keeping San Ramon, but if you work at San Ramon in the Legg org, you have to move. Except, there is a part of the Legg org staying in San Ramon. There are other offices all over the U.S. that aren't "hubs" but that have people working there (for whatever reason) and they aren't closing (at least not yet).

And then there are all of the exceptions for orgs that "get a pass".

And craft, obviously, never got to work remote or WFH. And, there have been IT employees whose VP's forced RTO back in 2022, 5 days a week.

So try to keep up, and just because its one way for you, it doesn't mean its that way for everyone.

their pension lump sum payout skyrocketed at the 20 year mark

Hogwash. It is almost completely linear. There is really no downside to just refusing to comply with stupidity and waiting to be fired. Being fired and retiring are identical outcomes at AT&T. You lose nothing but having to sit through a few unpleasant meetings.

Go to your office. Do your work. Cash that easy paycheck. No reason to view it as a challenge.

“No loss here. Picked up 2 headcount this year to cover new work coming in. We are scheduled to receive 1 more in June to offset a planned November retirement.”

Sure you did. More like picking up 3 DEI’s to replace 1 that told you to F.O.

I know of 2 retirements by people with about 35 years, and a guy who was offered a position from a previous employer. No droves of people leaving on their own. Perhaps the previous poster was referring to refusals to relocate.

"He kept messaging us wanting to know how everyone reacted to his departure"

IKR, they want someone to tell them the business is collapsing

"Not seeing anyone singing the praises of RTO, but also not seeing evidence of the OP's assertion beyond normal turnover"

Ditto. I've seen only one such misfit in the wild during the past 22 months of the RTO mandate. The guy had a good gig until he came under the influence of the sky-is-falling crew. Became grossly insubordinate and then quit with no future propects. He kept messaging us wanting to know how everyone reacted to his departure. Someone finally told him no further communication was necessary, and wished him well in his job search.

People are leaving in droves. You are either working home by yourself or completely clueless to what is going on around you.

My org is scrambling to backfill positions from people who left bc of RTO

I also never see such of bad ways over said decade as dooes the OP.
I and team also dooes the swapping of leads for job. One other fine day Veejay dooes swap the job with Sreenivas but still they are on same project. Such of crazy things I dooes see every day now. OP is correct! I also hide one such foot inside of door and other foot outside of office door. Do not slam door unless or until both of said foots can be away from said door!!!

“don't stay for the retirement benefits....there are NONE”

Different hires have different pension plans. I cannot tell you how many people I have spoken to over the years that did not know that their pension lump sum payout skyrocketed at the 20 year mark because they never used the payout calculator properly.
That’s behind me by six months so LFG!

"Been seeing quite a few ATT job posting externally."

I don't think people want to change bosses anymore. A new direct boss will not change the culture for you anymore when everything is being dictated from the top. So, internally, people are staying put, or they are leaving the company.

Been seeing quite a few ATT job posting externally. Usually they try to fill them internally, but seems to not be the case as they pass over internal candidates. So that being said, I think it’s safe to say they don’t care and don’t want the people they have.
