Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

If you are in your 40s and 50s looking

To replace your former salary and benefits it's a ghost town out there. Sure there may be 10/15 out of 100 who land something but trying to replace a $200K plus package is impossible after leaving ATT extremely difficult. I have been looking for over a year now and nothing. A few interviews but have led to nothing. I saved quite a bit during my 20 plus years at ATT and have cut my lifestyle back immensely so my non retirement savings should get me to 59. Wife isn't too thrilled but not enough so that she is out there pounding the pavement or was willing to move to Atlanta. Good luck but think twice about quitting.

Do What? My spouse isn’t even close to that. I am but, I don’t work for T. If he was bringing that in, I wouldn’t have to do a 3 hour commute everyday.

No job here is worth anyone getting paid 200k a year. No wonder why you’re got cut.

Poster may have been guessing. Surplus folks don’t get a bonus payout breakdown and need to calculate it themselves. They’ll likely be closer to 27k than 30k which isn’t that far off from a guess.

Still a nice payout to leave and find a better gig.

Good for you. Only the bonus amount looks wonky. If your severance was 90k, you were making about 180k. I think the Success Bonus Target for 2024 was 11-13% for a lot of L2, and that doesn't get you 30k for Success Bonus at the 114% it paid out. If you were an L3, I think L3 and higher may get a higher target, but 180k salary for an L3 is a little low. And if you were an L3, there would have been more $ than just the Success Bonus--there was an additional cash incentive paid over 2 years.

Weird that anyone would downvote someone who made lemonade from lemons.

I’ve seen a few land in nice places after the Sept-Dec rounds. The couple I know networked hard with former colleagues to find their next role.

Going through this myself. Trying to decide how much of a cut in pay I’d be willing to take. I keep going back and forth because I make a good salary here but I’m absolutely miserable.

The way I look at it, in my mid-fifties and still here, is that hopefully I won't "need" to make as much as I do right now if I have to land a new job elsewhere in the next year or 2.

Mainly due to the fact that with the job insecurity here over the last 5-10 years, it caused me to re-evaluate all of my personal finances. I decided it made a lot of sense to eliminate all debt, including my mortgage, while I am still earning real good money. We drive 10-year-old paid for vehicles.

It's not necessarily "fun" to take a big chunk or even all of that bonus, and throw it at your mortgage principal - but paying that su---r off will help you sleep better at night, especially when your number inevitably comes up here.

52 here. Immediately landed at a competitor at 200k base plus bonus.

So let’s recap:

  • 90k severance
  • 15k PTO payout
  • $500 retirement party
  • $500 retirement gift
  • roughly 30k march bonus
  • 500k pension lump sum

Rolled into a 200k base job a week after surplus.

Grass is greener and prettier.

I think staying at one place too long is a detriment these days. People figure your skills stagnate the older you are the harder it gets. My advice, get certifications outside of PLE, stay fit, try to look young, buy a new wardrobe. Your appearance is as important as your resume. I’m mid 40s and interviewing externally. It is tough to get those interviews for sure. Look for hybrid roles, less applications and thus competition.

Honestly, when I look around this place, it’s no wonder some of you have a hard time finding a new job.

You look like the night of the living dead.

I on the other hand am tall, thin, handsome, and well spoken with a resume that can compete with anyone’s. Consistently ranked number 1 on my team and highly respected in my org. I have a positive attitude and I’m 100% reliable. I haven’t used a sick day in years. I come in early and leave late. Did I mention I have a lot of contacts from my 27 years in this business?

There’s never been a time in my life when I’ve competed against what’s out there and lost. I have all the confidence in the world that any company out there would be lucky to have me.

In closing, don’t worry about me. Worry about yourself.

Most surplussed employees I know ended up working in other fields since they couldn’t get other tech jobs. Microsoft Office apparently isn’t an in demand skill.

You’re pathetically transparent. Ever since those chatgpt post exposed ATT for its crimes they’ve been trying to bury the posts and instill fear
