Depending upon one's pension plan, if eligible, a 12/1 off payroll date could mean Nov 2022 IRS segment rates would apply for a 1/1/23 lump sum commencement, hence one may be better off leaving voluntarily submitting their resignation and leaving 11/30, lump sum pension commencement 12/1 with Nov 2021 IRS segment rates.

Those on the legacy S / MW +1 plan could be lucky enough to get the 6 month involuntary severance package and a pension lump sum 12/2 commencement date. That would be sweet and was my dream earlier this year.

However, I already submitted my resignation effective Nov 2022 to obtain a Dec 1 pension lump sum commencement. Being a high rated performer who got ICA money last June, my interest in leaving would likely never be accepted.

Been through this a few times, had to take a downgrade to remain employed, one day form being off payroll and another time, had to relo to a hub city to keep my job. Company relo Plan A semi-covered the move. The income taxes on the gross-up was a ki---r. But I needed 3 more years which I got.

Now to move back home on my dime and enjoy the fruits of my labor and the trial and tribulations of working at AT&T for a few decades.

The 12/1 date is probably because there will be letters of interest sent out. After they are returned a layoff will take place, perhaps mid Nov at which time a 2 week notice will be given.

OP here. They didn't give any idea of numbers. The emails are not interest in leaving - they are letting you know if you are in an affected group or not. I am assuming they will let those affected know soon after that.

Email for "Interest in leaving", or announcing surplus?
