Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Have some self-respect!

Why would anyone move to a new city on their own dime to keep working for this company with no guarantee of employment, five days of RTO in low class office space with no guarantee of parking or a desk, tracking your every move and reporting the slightest variance.

Almost all the beneficial "Rule of 75" benefits are long gone, so it can't be for the retirement perks.

The company provided a fairly generous severance package. Why not just take that and have up to six months pay for not working while you look for a job at a decent company?

It reminds me of “Please, sir, I want some more.” from Oliver Twist. Begging for a meager hand out, or in this case begging to keep working for this pathetic company.

Have a little respect for yourself.

Some do because they need to ride out their time for 401k vesting or pension lump increase due to MR75 (SBC pensions).

Beyond those reasons, it’s VERY stupid to move. This company is crashing and burning with zero new innovation. Were the 3rd wireless carrier because you can’t go further down 😂

Who said it's on my own dime? Just because you didn't get offered relocation...

Every time I am talking to someone that moved for this company in the name of RTO, I can't help but think what a pitiful person they are to have made such poor life choices that led them to not have a better option.

The company is not looking for critical thinking skills

If everyone says no, they will have to reconsider.

Just the opposite. That is precisely the outcome they want. They have a stack of H1Bs visas ready to go in Dallas to replace the 30% or so of the headcount that is needed to keep the lights on. They get rid of old expensive white people to hire young inexpensive brown ones and it is all completely legal unless you challenge it in a class action, but that will take a decade to settle. The company is betting those lawsuits will go nowhere, and they may not be wrong.

“Someone can have my spot.”

Not your dog ‘Spot’…not a liver spot or a parking spot, but YOUR spot.

If they do not have the resources to move they have been financially irresponsible,

Had I known when the severance was offered that we would be 5x, I would have taken the severance. If they offer severance again, I am out!

Exactly the point, they want to fire without media attention.

Back in the day with relo, about 30% would actually take the relo and move.

A majority of employees have no other employment options. It’s either move or retire.

I agree with the OP and I won’t be moving. Someone can have my spot. Everyone that I know that moved are older just wanting a couple more years so they can retire. Too many people on that mindset accepting whatever they are given is why we are where we are. If everyone says no, they will have to reconsider. They are having a hard time finding talent that wants to work here and sure can’t keep the younger workers with the current policies. The market is shifting, jobs are opening up again. More and more people are getting interviews with other companies. Hybrid jobs are easier to get than a remote job and most companies are hiring for hybrids. The few I see fully on site full time have very few applicants. Remote jobs have thousands of applicants. Say no and find something else. Make the company shift.

They neither want nor expect you to move. The know the only employees who would even consider it are young, broke, and subservient and lack any other job market opportunities. In other words, the exact demographic they want. Everyone over 40 with self respect they want out the door, and this is their evil little ploy to accomplish that goal. At least if you get the relocate order you get a severance check. The rest of us are just expected to retire.

" The company provided a fairly generous severance package"

Did you mean "provides" a fairly generous severance package?

First, that's incorrect. It is average to below average.

Second, at this point, if they would simply offer said average to below average severance to get people to leave, they would get a lot of takers. But they won't do that.

Because they would prefer to make people miserable so that they quit (no severance necessary).

Some people do not have the financial resources reserved for a layoff at this time. Other in middle management may not have the narrowly specialized skills that today’s job market is requesting. Still others may be caught up in the global shift to AI/ML skills and need to hit the books once again. There is nothing wrong with hanging on a little bit longer to collect a paycheck. Isn’t that what the fu--ing id--t Jeremy Legg did when he accepted the job as CTO? Do you think the fu--ing id--t came to AT&T because he wanted to malign his career with the biggest bozo clown show company in the world? No, he probably did it for the paycheck instead of being unemployed.
