GM span of control

Does anyone know is there a requirement for number of direct reports to be a GM? I have been seeing directors with 1 or no direct reports. I have even seen AVP reporting to AVP. Im wandering if we will see more reductions coming.

Specifically, to be labeled the GM one of the following must be true: Control of a Channel or Specific Organization (No size specific), at least 100 Individuals within Hierarchy chain and/or at least 2 Director (L3) reports.

General guidelines and there have been exceptions here. A GM title can vary including: AD/GM, Director-GM, AVP, and VPGM.

In some cases a VP, SVP, or EVP can be considered a GM. It's also important to note that there are some cases of SM-GM (L2) IF they are responsible for an organization or market on their own. Most common in newer Business Units.

Confusion and mayhem is on purpose. Harder to follow what is happening and to sue for abuses of labor and civil rights laws

There are individual contributor roles at the L3 and L4 levels (and the L4 individual contributor title was recently changed to "AVP" which is just confusing).

We're not going to lose good workers because they don't meet the standard span of control. Also, you can get a waiver for anything

If I had a dollar for every time they brought up SoC and did nothing I'd have retired 5 years sooner. Who TF knows. Some of the people with few DRs are doing the best work, but the squareheads that run HR can't understand. Since they don't really do any.
