Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Oh cr-p

Oh no, y’all! My manager rescheduled our one on one meeting to before the team meeting on Tuesday. Required: in person meeting (we always meet in person, but there’s that option to do it over teams, not this time). Looks like my time here is up.

It’s been real… Real depressing.

False alarm for me. Counting my blessings for now…

I still laugh when I think about a comment about me by my manager about 20 years ago.

"If I ever have to fire _____ I am taking someone in the room with me. Maybe 2 someones..."

What’s your managers calendar look like? Mine had plenty of wide open space the week of our cancelled 1:1, so it made little sense to have a new 1:1 scheduled for the following Tuesday morning.

The other thing that clued me in was fellow teammates also having their 1:1s cancelled and rescheduled to that Tuesday, as I was able to figure out who else it happened to, and we were all let go. Might be worth a conversation or two, if the trust is there.

So what ended up happening? Was all the paranoia worth it?

If the direct manager is assigned to do the displacement, then they do know several days in advance because they have to take training and attend a preparation meeting. Often, though, someone higher up will officially do the displacement and will only notify the direct manager the night before. I was told a week in advance of the employees I would displace and I conducted mine in person.

Would managers even lay off people in person?

Me too. I’m so nervous. I have so many bills and daycare. My family can’t afford a layoff. Is it true that sometimes the managers know this far in advance?

Maybe it's because you say y'all too much.

There is obviously multiple ways someone can be displaced - the more random type where it is a last minute notification based on some algorithm , or a planned displacement that targets a specific role or area.

Just a rescheduled meeting. Managers generally don’t know until Monday night before who is on the layoff list.

sorry to hear it - dont react negatively during the layoff meeting - your mgr is just reading a script. if you are in a one-party consent state, record the meeting. if you have a good relationship with your boss ask them for honest feedback later on - sometimes there are some insights. Treat the notice period as a 60d paid internal job search and networking leave - you will still be able to apply as "internal" during that 60d window. good luck!

We know this is bullsh-t because line managers only find out a day before

Yeah, plan for the worst and hope for the best. A couple of weeks ago, my manager cancelled my 1:1 and then scheduled a new one for the Tuesday after the upcoming payday. I had to wait a week in contestant suspense trying to envision all possible reasons for the new 1:1. It was indeed the dreaded call.

If true, respond with grace and dignity. Life is better and healthier outside of Wells. Have faith in yourself and keep moving forward. Good luck!
