Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Contracting companies?

I realize the job market is garbage right now, but my job is making me hate life. Contracting gigs sound really good right now. Area of focus would be data, reporting, etc.

What contracting companies do banks use? I haven't worked with contractors at Wells so there's no one I can ask specifically. Googling this question just turns up a bunch of sponsored results that aren't really helpful.

I don't want to contract at Wells (obviously) but I'm guessing other banks probably use similar companies.

Anyone know if Hiring Manager at WF for contracts can look up previous managers in the system for anyone that is a former employee? My last manager did me wrong. If I give a different person as a reference, will they go directly to them or still reach out to the last manager of record, or another previous manager of record in the system for a reference?

@jk+1jpjtw1e2, probably that's because most mass layoffs happen around Jan-Feb each year before companies distrubute bonuses.

I was chatting with one of the contracting companies that I use. They mentioned that Jan/Feb were dead but Mar has been crazy for them.

Not commenting on the wisdom of contracting just pointing out some recent market conditions feedback.

Hey OP here. When you post negative things, you're more likely to receive same kind of response. Same goes for positive.

@fz+1jpjtw1e2, funny you said that because I was thinking the exact same thing. Most fulltime employees are still being treated like garbage anyway. Unless your title is executive director, senior vice president or above, no one respects you.

"Remember though that if you’re a contractor, people will treat you like one. As a contractor, I was treated as less than a person many times. Not to mention the fact that they can (and will) cut contractors at any time with zero mercy."

You are trying to be helpful, appreciated. But many FTEs already feel like they are treated as less than a person. Given long term WF location strategy / efficiencies cutting, many FTEs will be cut at any time with zero mercy.

For some, going the contractor path is the better option, even for the short term.

If you have a FTE job you'd be a fool to leave for a contract job.
Upskill, automate, etc to make your job easier and stay FTE.

A lot of contracts don’t lead to FTE, despite what they tell you.

Yes - TekSystems and Apex are noteworthy! I started as a contractor with TekSystems then moved into FTE.

Sorry for the typo/grammar errors on the Wipro/Infosys post. I was typing on my phone. I wanted to add I've heard very good feedback on TekSystems and Apex as well. Great post as I'm expecting to get 'the call' this year and have been thinking about this option myself

So.. you’re the one to blame for Wachovia collapsing.

Be aware of the 18 month limit. After 18 months of continuous contracting, you have to leave for 6 months before you can rejoin as a contractor.

@a3+1jpjtw1e2, the use of LinkedIn also has some downside. I get too many spam emails from Indian contractors everyday. Most of those jobs are totally irrelevant to my background. I think the best way is to directly approach the contracting companies.

OP here - many thanks for the replies so far.

This is the first time I've posted a question that received positive/constructive responses.

Agree about TEKSystems. Also had success with Randstad. On LinkedIn, make sure you change profile settings so Recruiters will see you are available for immediate work. (Do not use the "Open for Work" green circle unless you want everyone in your network to see you are job searching.) More recruiters will reach out to you directly through messages or maybe phone, including the temp staffing agencies. Got a few leads since making the change in LI.

I used FirstPlace to get into Wachovia and converted to FTE right before 2008. We all see how that worked out...

I've used teksystems to land a job in the past that ended up being FTE. A friend just used them in January to land a job at Apple. Another friend used Apex Systems to land a job that ended up going FTE.
