Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Timing of Jumping Ship

Pretty sure I'm in line for displacement at some point this year. I've got a good opportunity I might jump ship for. Can I accept an offer with another employer but not give my notice for another month or 2 as long (as I don't do any work for the new company of course)? Is that a violation of some rule or code? If I want my start date on the new job to be June 1, when am I expected or required to give my notice?

If your job is easy enough to double-dip and accomplish the work at both places without impacting the other, or running afoul of conflict of interest issues, go for it. There is nothing wrong with it if you're honoring your commitments and able to perform for both WF and the other employer.

Yes, it's looked upon poorly by executive management, but eff them. They serve on other companies' boards while "working" here, why shouldn't you be able to do something similar? Your manager may, or may not, have an issue with it. It's up to you to manage up in the former scenario, or not make it an issue in the latter.

Or you could always accept, then once you start working the new job, suggest to your manager that if RIF is being looked at, you're ok with being one of the RIF'd folks. You'd be doing them a solid by giving them an easy choice to push up the chain, and they'd be doing you a solid by hooking you up with a package.

The main key is to not accept a new job offer during the WARN period. If you accept prior to, or immediately after the WARN period, you don't jeopardize your severance.

The longer the time between when you accept an offer and when you start, the more that can go wrong. Offers can and do get revoked, even once accepted.

If you get an offer that you want to take - take it and arrange for a start date no more than 3 weeks later - 2 weeks notice and one week to live free and enjoy it.

Don’t try to play games with “maybe I’ll be displaced and get severance” in the meantime. Keep in mind that when you are displaced you’ll still be an employee for 60 days, so unless you’re getting displaced next tuesday you’d still be an employee on June 1 for any displacement after that - and working for someone else forfeits your severance

Yeah. EC9 is my planned displacement package. Nobody's hiring anyways, so what's the point? There is no future.

If you want to accept the new job offer, do it now. Stipulate with them that you can start on June 1st (if they want you to start earlier than that, go with whatever they offer, because your objective is to get out from where you are now, so your allegiance is to them now, not WF.)

Standard notice is 2 weeks, but you aren't required to do so, and especially if you already have something else lined up, who cares? Make sure you have the new job offer formalized in writing, then take any/all PTO you have racked up at WF. If WF doesn't approve you to take PTO with such short notice, then give your 1 or 2 weeks' notice with them then. If you're approved for the PTO, take it, and then when you get back to WF from "vacation", give them your 1 or 2 weeks' notice. What's the worst they can do at that point, fire you? Again, who cares, since you already have the new job set to start.

However you arrange it, make sure to give yourself a couple of weeks' breathing room between jobs. You deserve some time and space to unwind, decompress, and prepare to start your new job refreshed.

I assume the new company is not ready to hire you sooner? I'd wait until 2 weeks from your new start date to give notice.

I would accept and get out of this toxic workplace asap. Employers are getting fickle these days. The other employer might rescind the offer if they find someone better.

Because it would be a conflict of interest to be working for Wells but have already accepted an offer from another employer (not a bank FWI). If my manager found out (and that's possible) would I get fired? I guess my real question is whether I should wait to accept the offer until 2 weeks before I'm ready to start. Or can I accept now and just keep working at Wells without worrying about it.
