Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Is VZ a buyout target?

A lot of people are saying VZ could be targeted by hedge funds as a buyout who then break it up as the value of parts being greater than its mismanaged over leveraged whole. Personally, I don’t buy this since VZ long ago sold off all its real estate and towers to pay down debt. What is left to buy from VZ ? Billions of dollars of debt ? Am I missing something?

Telecom is a slow, debt-intensive business and I wish people would understand that “competition” just pushes companies to take on more debt to increase their product offering, all while having to honor the locked in price customers signed up for. If it weren’t for the inherent geographical monopoly of being the ILEC within your defined footprint, no one would want to run a telephone company.

I can see pieces of wireline getting sold off, especially the legacy Bell Atlantic/NYNEX lines in the NE. They did it in the past (when they sold the fGTE areas to Frontier).
