IBM to cut 72 jobs in Winston-Salem --

IBM is cutting 72 jobs in Winston-Salem starting May 30, the company told the North Carolina Commerce Department.
It’s a permanent reduction in force at 1100 Reynolds Blvd.
Most of the jobs, 63 in all, are what IBM terms “process delivery specialist.” The rest are seven positions called process innovations professional and two delivery managers.
IBM top executives hinted at layoffs in general at the company’s most recent quarterly report in January as the company reported full-year 2024 revenue was up 1% to $17.6 billion.
“We expect workforce rebalancing fairly consistent with prior year,” Chief Financial Officer James Kavanaugh said in the call with analysts.
As of Wednesday morning it listed open positions in Winston-Salem on its careers website, including for a systems services representative, described as responsible for on-site installation, maintenance and repair of IBM and multi-vendor hardware, software and operating systems in data centers.
The business technology publication The Register estimated some 9,000 workers of IBM’s 250,000 are at risk as the company balances its various business units, with reductions most likely said to be in consulting, cloud infrastructure, sales and those reporting to the chief information officer.
IBM's biggest operation in North Carolina is in and around Research Triangle Park, where a spokeswoman confirmed an unspecified number of jobs are disappearing.
The Winston-Salem notice was filed under a federal law, often referred to as the WARN Act, that requires public notice under certain conditions, including cuts of 50 jobs or more in one location.
