Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

San Antonio/CWA District 6

If anyone can please answer me this it would be very helpful. I’m a union member in the San Antonio department for 25+ years and we were on the old SW contract and got moved to the Mobility Purple contract about a year ago. I keep seeing posts and getting messages from our union reps that they’re fighting for other reps to stay on the SW contract which is the same one they took us away from. Is there a reason why some of us got moved to the purple contract but the same union is fighting for other departments in the same building to stay on the SW contract? Why not just move them to the purple contract like they did us or why didn’t they fight for us the way they’re doing so right now? Would love an honest answer if anyone knows, I mean I understand the purple contract is more in favor for AT&T but what’s the reason for some of us switching and others trying to stay on the same contract?

I guarantee no one is "fighting" for any group to be moved back to the COR contract. First of all, it is not possible. Second, the Company-AT&T is the one that made the decision to move everyone from the COR contract to the Purple contract, not CWA. The only thing CWA was able to do was to negotiate keeping your pay, and other little details. But this move was ENTIRELY AT&T. They did not ask, they just did it because they can. Just trying to address false posts and inaccurate claims/rumors and such.

The only reason the company agreed to a lavish contract with wireline employees is because the company knows their days are numbered . They handle wireline stuff which is well known it will be gone by 2026.

That move saved San Antonio. You were slated to close prior to that and now you’ve been hiring. St. Louis would have been the last SW care center left.

Just lay me off already and quit sc--wing around with peoples lives. T is making people that would love to get some type of severance package stick around longer than they normally would have liked! This once was a fun company to be part of, now it's the most miserable, uninspiring, demotivating, dull and indifferent company I have ever worked for! I wish every one of our employees the very best with or without T!

It was so the service reps could start handling mobility inquiries (and not just selling it). The reps who stayed service reps under the sw contract do not handle mobility. Most are offline doing back office work things like telco products. Their days are numbered and eventually will be surplussed or move to the purple and start taking calls.

“ What part of the contract gives the Union the right to make hiring decisions?”

Same concept as unions limiting the use of AI as part of contract negotiations.

And if you don’t think headcount considerations are taken into account for contract negotiations you are a fool.

“ Should have fought harder for prem techs or not allowed the company to hire so many”

What part of the contract gives the Union the right to make hiring decisions?

The union heads will tell you whatever they think you want to hear...no better that lefty politicians.
They will vacation in Hawaii, party in Vegas, or engoy the New York night life, all on YOUR dime.

CWA hasn't given a DAMN about you in years.

You may cry now.

They knew they would have had an issue moving everyone.

So they picked off the core techs because they have the lower headcount and the best and most costly pay/benefits.

You aren’t as powerful a group as you once were. Now you are the “prem techs”.

Remember all those years and contracts when you didn’t care that Appendix J was getting fu---d over?? Now it’s your turn. Should have fought harder for prem techs or not allowed the company to hire so many which diluted your vote and voice.

Now do as you are told!

Write a letter (email) to the National CWA and your District union with your concerns. They will not reply. Give it 2 to 3 weeks. Then file a DFR (duty of fair representation) with the NLRB. It's under Failure to Represent. Unfortunately CWA has a practice of undermining it's membership. Make sure you state that this was an Arbitrary decision by the union, it wasn't an accident. Your time is running out, so do it as soon as you can.

Should have been bigger fight, you were moved to a contract you didn’t have an opportunity to vote on. That’s not representation.

Union treating you like employees and NOT members.

As you mentioned, Purple is favorable to T and it is favorable for all outcomes including your dismissal. Your move to the contract, as the other poster said was part of a wink, wink deal to end the previous negotiations. (They negotiated for, and sacrificed the number agreed upon).

This time around will be no different. They are not “fighting” for your brothers to stay on the contract, they are merely “negotiating” what the union bosses will receive when they finally give you up. Each head moved to the Purple is worth “something” in “somebody’s” pocket. You know it, I know it. They know it.

Sounds like they made a back room deal when you guys got moved. That’s really dirty however we don’t know the terms or the reasons.

Open your eyes. The union isn’t your friend. They will pretend that they are there for you just so they can collect your union dues. This happens in many offices throughout the entire org, they bend over for AT&T and will do whatever they can to help them behind your back
