Severance and unemployment??

I've read the Severance pages of the Benefits Book and my co workers and I can't agree on the interpretation of this...

When you're displaced, can you get your severance benefit AND also get unemployment benefits??

MA law is that once your severance coverage date is up, that is when you are eligible for UE.
So, after 60 day non-working notice ends, severance calendar begins.

Example: If you got 2 months severance, you have to wait until those 2 months on the calendar pass until you are eligible for UE benefits. Even if the check was lump sum or not. You can collect UE during what is a severance period.

This is for MA-specifically.

Every state is different. In Iowa you can collect your severance and unemployment at the same time.

It varies by state. I know NJ allows you to take unemployment. Maybe NY? It's rare when a state allows you to take unemployment while also getting severance.

It’s based on what your State’s unemployment policy is.

Yes you get both. You just have to file for unemployment.

Some states do in fact pay unemployment even if you get severance. They pay based on the loss of benefits and the loss of benefit is that you no longer get or accrue PTO. Not many do but some do and I know someone who got both their full pay and a little over $500 a week from unemployment. Check your state rules.

Not sure what @a2+1jry5qk9s is talking about.
If you get laid off, you do get unemployment after the severance period runs out.

You don't get either if you're displaced. Displaced just means they're giving you time to find a new job within the company. If you find one, you don't get anything.

If you get fired for cause, you don't get severance or unemployment.

If you get fired without cause, you can only get unemployment.

If you get laid off, you get severance, but no unemployment.

In no situation will you get both.
