You get a performance review report containing tasks you didn't do well. The problem is you don't understand what projects the report is referencing. You were not assigned them. But you hardly talk to the new manager who was assigned to you. The new manager hates you. He is fearful that you will disclose how truly bad his code was, that you just migrated and handed it over to the offshore crew. But before you can go to the 2 up, which used to be your direct, you are told to write down the things you have done (for the 2nd time). Fortunately the meeting happens before then. In typical d-c effect fashion you see that they made this "manager" into a principal engineer.

start with this list.
you report to a manager:
with less than 7-10 directs and there is no sign your team will get new assignments or other work deemed critical to business
who cannot tell you what your job is (unclear responsibilities) or the responsibilities keep changing with no clear direction
who cannot fill your/your team's available capacity with new projects or additional BAU work
who regularly cancels meetings (like 1:1s) or reschedules them at the last minute only to no show (claims they are still in another meeting that went over; claims last minute deadlines; double books your 1:1 meetings with other "meetings")
shows a lack of empathy or respect for you (only cares about their needs and how you serve them) - and tries to gaslight when you ask questions

Your manager is let go, or stripped of their direct reports (becomes a single contributor)
You are asked to train someone outside the US on your responsibilities and create documentation

demographics: (additional risk factors)
50+ (60+ for sure)
unexpectedly receive a poor year end performance review (needs improvement or inconsistently meets) with BS "justifications" or "feedback"
moved from one team to another team and have a new manager
taking leave of absence and unsure youre job will still be there when you want to come back

@OP I can't say, but I can tell you I got a call from my manager last year near the end of Q1 reading me the script that my position "may be affected by location strategy in Q3".

3 of my coworkers wound up getting laid off and I was kept. YMMV
