Set Boundaries

Be aware of boundaries predators. The following are lesson learned.

Here are warning signs:

  • Person have no credentials for the role they are assigned and you are asked to "support" (aka do their work in addition to their work).
  • Person does not showed any signs of wanting to learn or to understand. They expect you to do the work for them and inform them on everything including sending them your work output.
  • The work asked for is clearly not within your scope, but within his/her scope.
  • Everything is urgent, "strategic", or a crisis.
  • You are expected to work overtime to meet their timeline, but you question the urgency.
  • Information is not shared transparently. Vague requests are made via text after hours. No formal work requests/paper trail.
  • They hint at future rewards or recognitions if you do X-X.
  • He/she is recognized for the great work for leading the initiative. You are a contributor.

Agree with @OP on setting boundaries. When raises stopped/couldn’t keep up with inflation then I stopped working overtime. Hard stop. I’m not paid for anything over 40, so they don’t get anything over 40. A meeting would work perfect on all cal dears except mine if we met at 5pm. Not happening. We can push it back three weeks when everyone is available during my business house.

Next I’m stopping any meeting before my normal arrival to office time. If they want to be jerks about flex your day, then I’ll just reject those meetings and propose a meeting time 4 weeks for now.

What goes around comes around.

Wow. I see this all the time. Management is promoting worthless employees and you must make them look good. It is team work to support the meek. Don't say the truth and say anything bad. Even if they ki-l someone or blow something up management has their back.

This looks like how long-time EMIT employees have to deal with favored pets as they rotate through different jobs.

Really? Never gotten an after-hours text to do work. Don’t play that game. Flat ‘no’ unless it relates to a refinery unit that shut down.
