Full day in the office

We had a meeting yesterday with our manager saying we must be in the office "a full day" when we go in. They didn't say how many hours because duh we are all exempt. Are y'all getting the same message from your bosses?

Instead of some people taking bus, why can't they drive to the office? That will solve the problem with missing bus and getting late.

We’ve been told when stuff like your bus scenario happens that may force you to have to spend less than 8 hours, you’re supposed to let your manager know so they can document it. Supposedly “life happened” stuff like that is okay as long as you document the reason every single time. Which feels very micro-managed for a salaried job but it is what it is I guess.

That’s all well and good but once again you’re assuming the time spent in office is 1:1 with the time spent working. For many of us the former is basically irrelevant to the latter.

You should be following Admiral McRaven's book's advice - arrive an hour early and leave late. Even if WF lets you go, that discipline will help you prosper elsewhere.

So what happens if my morning bus is running behind? Then I have to swipe in later than normal and potentially miss my evening bus back home. If I swipe out ti catch my bus will I only get credit for 7.5 hours and then not count that day? Since Wells promotes alternative transit and sells bus passes surely they have a policy, right?

do whatever you want to do until you show up on a report and get a taking to. easier to get away with of you aren't in the same location as your manager/leadership but many aren't so up to you.

Wait until Gen Z starts taking up a bigger slice of the job market. They aren't going to be showing up to work at 5 am. This is all about control, nothing more.

Managers who worry this deeply about productivity are just bad managers. Certainly not leaders. They need to fire more managers.

At least on our team, I think in your case we’d be told to take those calls with India at home, then when they’re done, go into the office and stay there for 8 hours from the point you arrive. Since that means we’d be working over 8 hours total each of those days, my manager at least would probably tell us we could work for less than 8 hours on our 2 at-home days, provided our workload that week allows for it.

There has been three separate occasions where my manager has told our team this including that our department is going to start tracking hours. Yet we know they’re not tracking hours and likely would’ve done so already if they could get around the whole exempt issue. Who actually wants to be in an office for 8 hours??

Anyone that goes into the office on Saturday deserves everything they get. I have been at wells 7 years and have never turned my laptop on during the weekend. Either you can’t manage your time, or are afraid to speak up and just accept more work like a doormat.

My group in Charlotte (Ballantyne office) has been told we're expected to be in the office a full day, and that 8 hours constitute a full day.

they should just go back to how things were lost COVID. Expectation was that you were in the office however many days you had agreed upon with your leadership and that was it, there was no microscope. If the work got done, no issue. If they want people to come into the office and stay, incentivise them, provide assigned cubes, parking, transit passes, reduced price snacks.

heck, back in the old days, I used to go into the office 5 days a week, and since I was 'salaried' some times on Saturdays.

@bh+1jsf8p77q, thanks for your comments, but these are my core meetings and I lead the meetings so I have no choice but to attend. This can be revsolved only if India teams can be more cooperative and make arrangements for their night shifts in their time zone, but they won't. If I have to get up 3am every morning and go to bed 8pm every night, my wife won't be happy. I was hired 7 years ago as a 100% remote employee and my original work hours were 8:00am-5:30pm. But for some strange reason, everything started changing and WF started ignoring the original work agreement.

I got the notification a few months back. No one in my team is following it. We still do 4-6 hours in office. No one has said anything about it.

My +2 doesn’t care and he’s not afraid to tell his boss that there is too much going on to worry about it. We do a lot of evening work and weekend work due to change management.

No, somewhere everyone has documented work hours. Mine are 8am-5pm. Go into Outlook and set up your hours. Then tell them due to the new in office hours requirements of a full day, you can’t make those meetings on in office days.

This happened to a peer team recently. This is not about the number of hours in the office but is about only working in the office. If you go home early and work from home then you are not working “a full day” in the office. They expect you will do all your work on that day in the office.

That’s your management deciding that and not a company rule. I have asked if they look at time spent in office and have been told no. All they track is that you were logged into the network or badged in your assigned workplace at least 3 days per week on average. I would say it’s your manager or above them pushing that requirement. It’s all about control by management and the “Don’t let the inmates run the asylum” mentality.
