Who is foolish enough to believe what Charlie stated during one Town Hall is permanent? He did not announce a 5-day in-office mandate for all (yet), but that has not stopped some managers from telling their teams to come into the office 5 days a week. It all feels like a nasty game.

Only an id--t would work 10-12 hours to make up for their commute time. I go badge in at lunch then come back home. If your location has a Connections, a badge swipe counts as in office and you don’t even have to sign in there.

I really don't care what they think the "go forward" plan is. Takes two to tango. You can demand 7 days a week in office and pay if minimum wage allllll you want. Gonna be sitting in that overpriced office space by yourself.

If Charlie’s changing his tone from hybrid bring a “competitive advantage “ to “concession “ then it’s only a matter of time. Ask any manager that is honest. They are just waiting for the announcement.
Reality is JPM, Goldman Sachs, Citibank, Stiefel, Morgan Stanley are all 5 days now. Merrill & Bof A are partial hybrid/5 day depending on role. Edward jones is hybrid but rumored to be going 5 day with their major restructure (& layoffs). The financial industry is moving back to 5 days like it or not. (I don’t btw).

Hey another narrow minded person is here.

There was a absolutely a mandate for a lot of people, the majority?, to come in 5 days a week. It was explicitly spelled out in offer summaries and provided the time needed to be in the office. But, that wasn't the case for you so must have not happened at all anywhere.

A major difference is the technology exists today that allows employers to monitor the true activity level of remote employees. It is a major feature of MS Teams.

They can do this because the economy is bad right now. People don’t have a choice. Once the economy turns around and employees have a choice we will see more remote options. It’s the constant push and pull of what employers want versus what employees want.

It is funny to me that a decade before Covid about the time swine flu was trying to be a pandemic, corporations were pushing everyone to have the capability to work remotely and even encouraged it. They were handing out laptops to everyone. Then we had Covid and it should have scared everyone into working remotely permanently. Now we are reversing and even going back to not being able to work remotely at all. Even removing our laptops. Had we not had the capability to work remotely, we wouldn’t have had a “pandemic”. It would seem they would see this as a real possibility of happening again, but I guess not. Makes you wonder especially if you have been paying attention and questioning things.

If your commute to the office has quadrupled in duration (45-120 min vs the previous 10 min), then how are those 3 office days a luxury? Given the 2 days remote are spent working 10-12 hours making up for the wasted time commuting to meet the now required 45+ hour work week, that is not a work life balance.
Pre-covid there were no requirements that an employee had to go to the office 5 days a week. I went to the office 1-2 days a week. Additionally, there were no requirements to be in the office 8 hours when you are there. The latter are the lastest orders from leadership.
It goes without saying these are attrition tactics.

Another benefit of being remote from the a business perspective is opening up the job pool. A candidate might see the perfect job for them but its only available in a state across the country, nothing new right? Well we've already shown it doesn't have to be that way. They're also limiting their candidates, perhaps there's a more qualified candidate in another state that could've done a better job than the candidates for the specific site they're hiring for. Its 1990's thinking in a 2020's world.

People need to get past working remote... On a 'status of hiring in the US' call last week individuals from a recruiting and placement company stated that client companies are telling them full-time remote positions are NOT their way forward. If hybrid is part of a position, the most common scheduling they are seeing coming through on new positions is 1 day a week remote.
