Thread regarding Cenovus Energy layoffs

layoffs this week?

I would assume they would want to complete the cleanup before CEO Town Hall in May?
In 2019 Husky did layoffs right next day after the federal elections. Maybe history repeats itself this time?

The employees that intrinsically know what to do and how to get it done will be fine. The entitled complaining twenty something year olds that play on their phone and gossip all day will be first out. Their “me, me, me” attitudes do not mix with this industry.

  1. The company has no obligation to pay severance.
  2. There has been ample notice of a reorg that will impact downstream and an opportunity to apply for several roles. Yes, you have to compete for the job.
  3. You know you should be looking for another job at this point. Look at the financials for Downstream.
  4. Most other oil & gas, as well as every other industry are laying off due to tariffs and a

recession.

  1. Guessing and pin pointing a date seems pointless.
  2. Directors and Senior Managers already know if there departments need to undergo restructuring. They can’t tell employees in advance that they are being eliminated on a certain date. That opens up risk to the company.
  3. There are too many people in this company. Many have to go. The work will get done somehow or maybe it won’t. Doesn’t matter. If you want to make money in this market you have to cut many many many people and let the pieces fall where they may.
  4. Cenovus made a mistake hiring too many junior employees into positions that we don’t need - but were “learning and development opportunities”’. Those people are now too labor intensive to manage for what their abilities are. They will be targeted in layoffs to retain more experienced and efficient employees that can be trusted to perform without expensive heavy oversight.

Don't think it will happen this week. They posted some jobs for Downstream that people are supposed to apply for. And it will be a few rounds of those. Seems they will drag with layoffs a bit more.

So, would they be stalling in hopes of people finding new jobs and moving on so they can avoid paying severance or hoping that the added stress provokes people into doing something inappropriate so that they can be fired? If nothing else, Cenovus seems strategic in their inability to support employees.

@cz+1jsv0d7ms 5 weeks? In the downstream they were told there was going to be a reorg in December, layoffs in January and they’ve been sitting in limbo since then with the new head of downstream who’s been absent for his people aside from getting rid of one vp and bringing in a friend from BP to replace. People have been in limbo for five months! waiting with no leadership presence.

Cenovus’ approach to this round of layoffs — dragging on for over five weeks — is creating unnecessary stress and instability across the organization. Employees who continue to deliver strong results are left in limbo, which only harms overall performance and engagement.

If leadership is truly focused on cost savings and efficiency, it would make far more sense to streamline layers of middle management rather than disrupt the front-line employees who are essential to the company’s success. A more decisive and respectful process is needed to prevent further long-term damage to employee trust and company culture.

There are so many smart people who want to do the right thing for the company. Lots of great ideas too! Management across the board should start listening to opposing opinions from their experts. Calm down the panic, step back and think. Make a plan forward to get out of this collective dysfunctional state.

This week and next but it will probably continue through the summer. They completely lost all control of this business and it’s now a scramble.
