Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Salary cut option

If you had an option: take a salary cut or get laid off, what would you do. If salary cut what percentage would you be open to take.

if Alvind gets 100% bonus cut, then I would consider a 1% salary cut.

I would accept the pay cut and then start looking for another job. It’s easier to find a new another job when you currently have one than it is to find one after you’ve been laid off. Companies will often lowball you if they know you have been laid off.

I mean, if we're at IBM, we're already probably earning under industry average for our levels. All IBM would be setting themselves up for is an immediate exodus of employees as soon as the job market improved - and that wouldn't be on their terms.

Was this option offered to you ? If so, what group do you work in?
I have not heard of this before. They would rather cut bait with people completely. Not reduce salary.

I would accept approximately zero point zero. I retired at IBM. Much earlier, I worked for a startup that found itself in some trouble. In that case, the idea of a salary cut was a possibility because the management was 100% up front about our situation. In the case of IBM, no chance. The company can easily afford you but would like to chose not to. Probably because they want to move your job to the subcontinent.

Seriously, unless they can come up with a really compelling reason to cut your salary and an explanation of how this can help you in the long term, choose your dignity first. Better to d!e on your feet than live on your knees, dude. Zero point zero.
