Remote staff gone by RTO date?

I’m on the People Team. I was told that as a remote worker, my job will be eliminated by the RTO date (4 days in office) in September. So there’s no incentive to work. Period. Yet I’m told I need to continue to work and do my job. RV has made this place a real dumpster fire!

Disagree with PGH closure. Local partnerships through CMU, Pitt, Duquesne, and startups indicate otherwise.

@km

You don't have to give them a reason.
They will force rank you to not meeting expectations, and fire you with no severance. This is how this POS of company operates now.

Yes, OP. Keep doing your job. Your incentive is hopefully the severance you will receive. Don’t give them any reason to take that away from you.

Again, going to say this. If they have a problem with staff being remote then stop closing locations that are far better than PA, NYC and india that they think are so great. Those places have the worst staff, high cost of living, pay and very cr-ppy staff . You cant get people who want to work in those areas so filling reqs is awful. Many of these remote workers they now have an issue with are putting out the damn fires they refuse to acknowledge are happening, they are the ones who know the systems and processes too, and keep having to cleaning up other teams messes and holding their hands. This place has gone to sh-t since these new sr mgrs came in. Im so Waiting for the big f up to happen that they wont have knowledgable staff left who can help fix what they allowed others to cause

I'm an Engineering member who was fighting tooth and nail to get fully remote since last year without any luck. My old managers are gone, and I have a new supervisor who's more lenient. Just recently before the 4-day announcement, I was filling out paperwork for my supervisor about moving to remote work, and she informed me that her direct manager told her that all remote positions in the firm will soon be eliminated. Anyone who doesn't comply ASAP will be automatically let go.

@aq, it's quite easy to process faxes with new technology.

  • I don’t think the executives care whether or not they have enough people to complete the work… They will just expect people to work even more hours and even more days.
  • that if they are tracking office attendance, there should be no fully remote employees… Especially at a Director level or above
  • I don’t think for one minute PIttsburgh is a permanent hub… I think they want New York so the executives can peacock and go to their homes on the shore

And they India because they are lemmings animal do and say whatever you want

  • I don’t think anybody’s guaranteed severance at this point… So while I agree that if you know your positions going to be eliminated, I would do as little as possible, I don’t think for one second just because they said it’s eliminated you will get your severance you have earned.

These people are despicable human beings & I hope karma catches up to them soon.

No, the ones who know our system inside out, know where to make changes in a system with more than 20 million lines of code, get called to help with Production issues, and have been here more than thirty years.

I don't even know what SPL and fit framework are, so I guess we're not doing/using that.

Our group has been whittled down to the point where it's a skeleton staff now. If the last of the people who know how things work leave, then you're left with people in India who haven't the slightest idea of what goes on behind the scenes.

The last changes they (India) made to a vital code module took a week to track down and fix. It was many layers deep in transaction processing, and you have to go through a lot of code and files to see where it's broken.

@aq+1jtb08t7c PA is not a growth center. What you hear are catch phrases like ‘we remain committed to Pittsburgh’ , ‘our presence in PA is vital’ etc etc. Robin views PA as an embarrassment. It is telling about the Mellon name getting erased and the sad state of 500 Grant street.

I feel for you as a fellow human, but it’s my opinion that the “PEOPLE” team, along with anyone with “director” in their title, should not be allowed WFH, if the rest of the staff is not allowed. Expectations should be higher for those groups, not lower. Lead from the front, and all that jibber jabber.

At some point in the near future they will have dug themselves into a grave where they passed the tipping point where they simply do not have enough employees to complete the existing work. Growth centers like LM, Poland, and India; not sure 🤔 if PA is still considered a growth center are inadequate to fulfill the current job responsibilities as dictated by the clients who flat out refuse to get on board with new technologies. Ask anyone in Asset Servicing how many premium clients are still faxing cash and trade instructions. Quite simply, all of them.

Look on the ‘not really so bright side’, if they told you that your position is eliminated, then you will get the full severance package. But be warned about going on cruise control and not working. 4 months is still more than enough ample time for them to give you a PIP, find problems and say your performance su-cks. This place would enjoy giving you nothing as a going away present. Just do the minimum to survive

I’ve heard they are reviewing all remote staff who WFH for a RTO but not managing directors they are not being looked at, not sure how that is fair to excluded a certain group of employees. I’ve heard even staff with medical exemption will be looked at as part of the RTO

This makes sense that this will be the next big announcement. Either move to a growth location and be in office 4 days a week or get canned.

Then when all these people quit they start begging them to stay because P-M has the groups spread so thin, they can't afford to lose knowledgeable people.

They treat you like sh-t until you call their bluff.

They already let the remote workers in Poland go. They were told in Dec they had to move to a growth center there or be let go in 3 months. And they are now full time in office. So I’m expecting to be full time in office by year end.

Which senior architects? The ones who drove this place into the ground with their SPL and fit framework nonsense?

If that's true for all remote workers, then our system is like the Titanic heading for the iceberg.
All our senior architects are remote, including the ones who just quit because they've had enough of the idiocracy.
