Direct vs IDL Layoffs

Can someone please explain the logic of laying someone off who has a charge number on a program? I can understand if someone is on IDL, but when you are fully covered? Someone still has to do that work? This makes no sense. I was fully covered on a program when they walked me out.

Sometimes it a formula and random, sometimes it’s because the DL employee pi---d off the wrong person (and likely has no clue), or can be a difficult person to work with (and again, has likely never received feedback), or the DLs boss/manager/GL is just a difficult person and last that I’ve seen is they’ve got someone on IDL that they think will be better to fill the spot and one of the two have to go. So cutting the DL person might be reducing IDL indirectly. As many pointed out, you are probably better off regardless if it was you or just random, good luck.

I don't understand why so many of you are still agonizing over this company. Things are not as bad out there as you think. It may take some changes like relocating or taking a small cut in pay for just a little while. Or maybe slightly outside your comfort zone. Time to kick off the comfy blanket snowflake.
There are currently 7.2 MILLION unfilled jobs in the United States. Go out and get one.

When did you get laid off?

Sometimes a contractor will dump a bunch of people on a contract just to avoid having them charge overhead. This happened at my location on a couple of firm fixed price jobs... it was more attractive to the company to blow the cost out of the water on that job by loading it up with people needing a charge number rather than have somebody charge a couple hours to overhead (or as the phrase here seems to be IDL for indirect labor).

Of course I have no idea how this might apply to the OP's situation but it is one possibility, yes those people were charging hours directly to a contract but the contract was overrun.

Or the directive came down from on high to just can some people

It's nothing personal. There's just too many of you working. The company needs to make a profit. Don't worry about the work getting done. A more well connected person will get the job. Welcome to L3HARRIS. Now go out and get a job with a better company.
