Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Life outside of EM

I left EM (EMIT) voluntarily in 2022. US employee. Last assessment was Outstanding so I wasn’t a PIP/PIL.

I talk to quite a few former colleagues and I lurk on here every few months to get a pulse on whether it’s worth coming back, and so far, the answer is no.

The grass isn’t always greener, and my new company certainly has its own issues, but I’m satisfied in my new role and have achieved a ton of personal and professional growth.

The lesson I’ve learned is that having someone else manage your career is not the best path. I had a great experience at EM, and probably should have left earlier, but all in all it was “Very Good”.

I lasted for 35 years finally retiring at the age of 64. Wife said three decades was enough. My boss asked me to stay another year to finish the project (DW Erha). It was a good run but I declined.

My secret, keep yourself in demand within your network. This worked for me. Will it work for you? Who knows. Find own way. Good luck. Peace

My grandfather worked for EM starting in the early 1900's for his entire career. I have been lucky enough to inherit a decent amount of stock which I treasure because it's a connection to those no longer with me. I'm sure it seems strange that I say this, and I know it's a completely different company now, but he was always proud to work for them.
