Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

I made a mistake

A year ago, I joined WF as a software engineer, hoping to find long-term stability. I turned down every other offer, believing this was the right choice. Yesterday, I was laid off. It feels like I made the biggest mistake of my career—and it’s heartbreaking.

To quote "Animal House" -- as Otter consoles Flounder:
"You can't spend your whole life worrying about your mistakes. You f-u-c-k-e-d up -- you trusted us! "

I know what you mean. WF , while having old tech, has a lot new tech for projects started in the past 7 or 8 years. The older folks on some teams tend to not want to learn anything new, however as an Angular and .Net developer, I've found we have the opportunity to keep up with our existing apps while still moving to Azure. On the downside, I was given my layoff relo notice so very little of this matters. I gained some skills, but due to the silos/separation of duties, it would not be complete enough to put Azure on my resume even with certs.

"You came here to hide from changes in the software industry"

Nope. Most of us had no idea WF uses 1980s technology. Try again.

Technology has gone completely into a ditch. Perhaps the worst leadership on planet earth. Constant micro-management by ineffective managers who couldn't write a line of code if you held a g-n to their head. Horrendous cloud strategy.

I think a lot of people feel the same...especially in technology. It's a train wreck and a circus..

OP I’m sorry to you and others. Take the time you need and then take a step forward. No matter if it’s 1 year or 20 years it’s hard. One thing you have going for you s that your skills are still relatively fresh so bouncing back hopefully won’t be too difficult. Had you been around too long you probably would have fallen behind and lost ground missing key marketable skills. If nothing else that’s a silver lining plus you get a little bit of severance plus the 60 days. May you rebound better than you expect.

OP - same thing happened to me. Different area. @ad is right - take a moment to mourn. I allowed myself 24 hours. Then you just gotta move forward and don’t look back.

@a4+1jv8by5as You delude yourself more than your assertions about the OP. There is no great future for WF. While Hudson Yards plays dress-up, it’s still a tarnished stagecoach that is barely top in most respects. You have a poseur CEO with a Napoleon complex and money-center delusions. The best outcome is Goldman buys it as an alternative funding supplement and dismantles the F out of it.

Stability! You came here to hide from changes in the software industry you couldn’t keep up with. You thought you’d be a big deal here because WF technology is old. boohoo. It is not heartbreaking to know that you have been kicked out because you had nothing to offer the company. WF will have a great future without deadbeat softies like you. Byebye and don’t steal anything on your way out.
