Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Work days are less productive due to RTO

Those of us on the West Coast are 3 hours behind the East Coast. My NJ peers have adjusted their schedules and leave at 2pm.m (rightfully so). I have only 3 hours per day to "collaborate" with them.

I don't blame them. They are doing the best they can to balance work & home life. Their children have afterschool activities and their commute is horrific.

our off shore partners in India as they want all mtgs before noon EST…

So I am not the only one that’s noticed the shift in their attitude. They are realizing the power they have over us since T is basically handing them the keys to the kingdom. The sh1t talking in Teams is shocking.

"Concerning RTO and childcare, there is this. Looks like there’s a kids summer camp at the Dallas hq."

Don't think for a second that this is for your benefit. T absolutely has figured out how to profit off of this too. I don't know what the rates are, but it's probably just a bit under what childcare runs in the area, so still a significant portion of your check. Pure sc-mminess.

Well it is better than our off shore partners in India as they want all mtgs before noon EST… I can remember back when T first started off shore work… India was required to work US central time zone hours… they make it impossible to get collaboration time accomplished when you have a key resource in the UK and a west coast business client… collaboration… wasn’t that “reason” given for RTO???? Hmmmm

Don’t like the routine?
Change your routine.
Show T how you feel.
You were looking for a job when you found this one.
Move on to bigger and better.

AT&T: where what you do does not matter. Only how and where you do it. Do nothing in the right building while telling your AVP how smart they are and you will go far.

Don't you see? There is a magical transformation for each worker when they hit company property.

We turn into obedient little efficiency drones, focused solely on task completion. No greeting coworkers, no discussion at all unless it's directly related to a work item. No coffee runs, no nothing except straight pure work.

We all do this every day, right? No double standards at all?

"Righto. Seeing the kids as they come in, getting them a snack, maybe starting them on homework takes 15-20 minutes."

You directly led to implementation of 5x8. Thanks for nothing!

How is that any less productive than chitchatting with your coworkers about non-Work issues?

"RTO was never intended to support childcare. This was widespread abuse. You are not focused on work when watching young children at home."

The OP didn't mention childcare. After school activities include sports and tutoring. Leaving at 2pm is the only way around a 90 minute commute during rush hour.

You are expecting personal responsibility from whining snowflakes.

I worked and paid child care for 38 years. Dealt with sick kids and aging patents using vacation days. I'm sorry but you can't be doing daycare and working at the same time.

“Seeing the kids as they come in, getting them a snack, maybe starting them on homework takes 15-20 minutes.”

You need to check after school programs in your area like so many other parents do.

And the West Coast people aren’t available to “collaborate” at 8am est, so it goes both ways, even if they had your idea of “regular hours.” So shut it.

Righto. Seeing the kids as they come in, getting them a snack, maybe starting them on homework takes 15-20 minutes.

There has never been an instance since office work was a thing, when an office worker has wasted 15-20 minutes. Excellent reasoning, my dude!

"This point actually supports 5x8 RTO."

Yes, if it makes sense to spend 10 hours a day commuting vs most of those hours available to work. Yeah, that makes perfect sense!
