Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

As an incoming analyst, should I be worried?

I've seen a lot of posts here and across Reddit describing how terrible it is to work at this company, and that it's only getting worse. Common complaints include outsourcing to India, toxic workplace culture, lazy employees, and no bonuses. I'm about to start as an analyst in Asset Servicing in NYC. Should I be job-hunting from day one? Is it really as bad as people say?

@ex exactly. We have out hands full now having to tell everyone else how to do their jobs so we can do outs. Credit can use you. Most of them dont do sh-t and don’t know sh-t and make more than tbey should. You’ll fit in nicely

Run. You don't want anything that happens here. Run and don't look back. This is a terrible place to start your career.

It’s awful… run. Please. It’s a waste of time. This company has d-mbed down all the processes so offshore can easily handle it and do more quickly. It means you really aren’t going to learn much anyway. Also, at least in my dept, no one below a grade I was given a bonus because they were OT eligible. Assuming you can even get OT if you want it. Please run! You will sit and rot and whatever you do learn you will be forced to train and hand off to Pune.

You’ll probably be doing mostly grunt work as an analyst, but you’ll be treated better than 95% of employees. If things don’t feel good after a few months, just see how the rest of the org feels!

Just wait until you get a load of Dermie and his Astrodome sized head. That will be the moment where you will have hated taking a position here.

You should 100% be worried. The company is toxic. It’s not the people complaining. Don’t be fooled. Those that are on this site attempting to diminish the valid concerns of both tenured people and the newest staff are doing nothing more than damage control. It will not take long for you to realize that processes are broken, communication is terrible between areas, training is severely lacking, business decisions are made without full understanding of the overall ramifications, and that you will likely be blamed and scapegoated or things completely beyond your control.

I do agree that no organization is perfect, BUT this one has been completely undone. It is the most unhinged company I have ever dealt with or been employed by. If you do not have thick skin, please develop some as quick as you can. I wish you all the luck in the world but please, do not stay here.

@c6 nice try loser. The people PO’d are sick of being sh-t on while newbies come in at higher pay and special treatment for knowing nothing. So crawl back from under your bosses desk cause you’re not that talented. An analyst will take that extra curricular activity took

Don't be worried. These are the people who are po'd that they have to work in an office 4 days a week. They have to get out of their pj's and join the land of the living. You will be perfectly fine!

Dont worry as an analyst you get special treatment. Pay far higher than seniored admins, bonuses for being here less than 4 months when you are still in training and all the “mandatory “ meetings during production times the program has come up with. The rest who actually work are the ones sc--wed

Congratulations. Learn as much as you can and get good experience for your next job. Dont let the place wear you down or cause you health issues. After about 2 years move onto somewhere else. Don't stay longer than 5 years.

@OP

Here’s an honest review, from someone relatively senior and tenured at the firm. Is it perfect, no, of course not. Especially at my level where we’re often asked to support decisions we don’t 100% agree with. Managers are often vilified (especially on this site) when the reality of it is that many are just trying to sustain a job, just like everyone else.

There’s a lot of good in BNY, and a fair amount of bad, but as an incoming Analyst, you should be coming in to work hard, enjoy the benefits (you will get favourable treatment vs. non-analysts) and using it as an opportunity to learn.

It won’t be perfect, but no organisation is.

Good luck

I’ve been here for about 2 years now. I’m lucky to have a job but man does it su-k having to come in 3-4 days a week just to sit at a desk on calls with teams in Pune. And then managers get annoyed with YOU because clients are upset but the truth is, the workflow process is all sc--wed since 75% of our work has been transitioned to offshore teams. You get hired for a 9-5 job but you communicate with people on the other side of the world who work completely different hours. I send a message and don’t get a response until 6 hours later. It makes 0 sense and messes up communication…… but riiiight……. I’M the one tracking below expectations……..

My young friend, this place is cancer of the mind and soul. You can make what you want of that.
My advice to you - get settled in your new position and after 30 days, start a new job search. You will be used, discarded and recycled here. Robin was in Pittsburgh this week talking out of his rear end saying ‘soon there will be more employees here than NYC’
You can also make what you want of that.

It’s toxic and not a great place to work once you’re atleast a few years in. If you’re going to work here, you want it to be your first job. You’ll be entry level and won’t realize the bullsh-t for a bit and shouldn’t be impacted by layoffs. Try to network and make some relationships in addition to picking up some skills. Then be on your way to bigger and better opportunities elsewhere.

Don’t listen to what folks say negatively about this company. Is this company terrible? 1000%. Is this the worst and unethical management? 2000%. But you need a job and are new. Just don’t get comfortable n keep looking for the next job n build connections

You have an edge in that you're a younger, "moldable" analyst who is able to/more willing to adjust to certain ways of working than the older crowd. I wouldn't come in worried about being laid off, but I would come in being mindful of the sensitive emotions in your more seasoned employees who have lost friends or good coworkers.

My advice is to treat it like boot camp rather than a long term career - work as much as you're able to, learn as much as you can, build up your skills and achievements and then move to a better fit. Or hey, maybe you'll end up loving it and want to stay. Your mileage may vary.

Welcome and best of luck!
