Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

“Return to Office” is the corporate version of “We’re just taking a break.”

It’s not a return — COVID was 5 years ago. That’s longer than most people’s tenure here. Entire careers, promotions, and job changes happened under the hybrid deal. Most folks being told to “come back” have never even set foot in the office they’re assigned to.

Call it what it is: a change to your employment terms. The “return” branding is just a legal move — makes it easier to deny unemployment and skip severance checks. Translation? It’s not about collaboration. It’s about cutting costs without calling it a layoff.

@a1 So don't quit, make the fire you and then you can get unemployment.

Lol, the average tenure of a VZ employee is 20+ years, not 5. The majority of them never worked from home prior to Covid. Everyone should have seen this coming when looking around at other company's policies. And it has nothing to do with collaboration. They want you to quit. Reducing headcount without severance or unemployment works for them. And yes, they can change the policy anytime they want. Your only recourse is to su-k it up, find another job or open your own business where you can make the rules.

I personally worked from home for 20+ years of my career. Once the outsourcing started, I saw the writing on the wall and took one of the VSPs. I come here once in awhile to check on the current climate. I can see it's getting worse.

correct, it is all about control. Matt Ellis nearly "died" when we went hybrid - he was an in the office guy, twisting arms. But, they got to him EARLY and suddenly, he was cool with hybrid, until he too, was let go.
Control is the name of the game, I'm sure many here remember that VZ FORCED us to buy 50% of our 401k match to corporate stock to support their buyout of Vodafone. All about control...

Simple fact here. Nobody is as productive at home as they are in the office. Don’t like it? See yourself out.

Priorities change. Get on board with RTO or get out. Nobody needs you. RTO and actually work or move on. Too many people playing golf and going on Costco runs or running child daycare from home for too long.

You just don’t seem to get it do you? They, being the ones at the top, have to show who’s the boss. Who’s in control of your life. They don’t just give you a paycheck, in their eyes, they own you. And this is just to remind you of that. And yeah, like other said, don’t like it? There’s the door. Free force reduction. And whoever’s left? Pick up the slack with no additional pay.

I am really hoping for an offer for early out. But I don’t honestly see one coming. This is much cheaper to do it this way.

“ Most folks being told to “come back” have never even set foot in the office they’re assigned to.”

You are acting like we are moving from 0 days to 3 days per week. The current policy is 8 days per month.

So unless people are ignoring the current policy, they have set foot in the office. And if they were ignoring the rule when it was 8 days, they will likely ignore the rule now that it’s increased.

I was hired 3 years ago and was told I only needed to come into the office occasionally for meetings. There was never any hint that I wouldn't be forced to move. I was sold this job as being amazingly flexible and ahead of other companies by having a remote workforce. I have had a baby since and my husband's job is here. We can't move. They are basically firing me by forcing me to quit.
