BNY Performance Improvement Plan

I am curious about a situation I recently experienced.

A few months ago, my management staff placed me on a Performance Improvement Plan. During our initial meeting, there was no discussion regarding specific actions I could take to enhance my performance. After four months, I was removed from my position due to poor job performance. At no point during the four months, between my write-up and my removal from the building, was there a follow-up meeting to address how I could improve my performance.

Is this typical?

Sounds like they failed to do their homework opening themselves up to a wrongful termination suit.

They no longer do the PIP or GO where they gave you the choice of being severed with 12 weeks pay. Now it’s PIP and most likely GO with no severance. Majority of those on a PiP are predetermined to be let go at the end of it, no matter how hard you work or if you meet the expectations of the outlined plan. This is likely why your manager didn’t follow up or provide more direct guidance. They knew they had no choice but to cut you at the end of it.

I did not sign the separation agreement and I did not accept BNY's payoff / severance.

No substance to it, just a method to reduce head count and extemely political not performance based. If you did not sign and receive a severance, you have a good case an attorney would like to take.

@d4 lol. nothing fishy about this. i'm estimating 15 years out of 17 years I exceeded expectations on every performance review. the last couple of years I've achieved expectations and the last year of PIP I was below expectations. go figure this out for yourself.

@d4 I meant in my 17 years at the company, 90% of performance reviews were EXCEEDED expectations. 10% met expectations. First time ever i got a PIP.

The PIPs are bogus with a few exceptions. If they did that to you get out of there or stay and rake legal action if you are terminated.

@b2
They just didn't want to give you severance.

no one gets 90% exceeds they save those for promotions i find that story very fishy. you must have done something to really pi-s off your manager.

Same thing happened to me. I was told I was being placed on PIP but there was no follow up- 3 months later I was let go.

It's called pip and go for a reason. I'm sorry

@a7 me too. As soon as PIP ended, I was let go. I did everything possible during my PIP only because I have never had this in my 17 years at this company. 90% exceeded expectations, 10% met expectations.

I am besides myself. Since being let go in June 2024, struggling to find a job. Maybe I deserved the PIP.

@af thank you for the comment about RIF.

When I lost my position, the manager of this department did a group huddle with remaining department staff and said I... lost my position do to poor job performance and not improving my performance over a determined amount of time.

I found this interesting since it was never mentioned what I could do to improve my performance and I thought it was classless for management to tell my former co-workers in a group huddle the reason for my dismal was poor performance.

@ae unless they placed you on a RIF to get you out faster without going through all that performance bs

@OP 1) the plan is supposed to outline specific areas of improvement that should be discussed 2) mgmt is supposed to be meeting with you weekly while on iy giving updates before the final at which they should say meets or not

I’ve heard this exact story a few times.

I’ve also heard of instances where the employee put on a pip demanded specific written actions needed & specifically what they were not doing to cover themselves and eventually management back down.

You are lucky you had 4 months. I was let go on the last day of my PIP. I did everything during my PIP. Worked hard and extra. It didn’t matter.
