Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Negative sides of higher compensation

I got a 13.5% increase but I am not sure if I am really happy. My thinking is that the more my compensation accelerates, the more I accelerate to the PIP-off finish line. I would prefer a conservative 4% increase if that means more job security. I don't know what to think anymore. I guess money does not buy happiness. Job security does.

That's an interesting perspective, @1iuq+1k2HUlMa.

Save the raise. Add it to your nest egg. If you get let go in the future you will have a good chunk of money to keep you going til you get another job. Never think you are worth less.

Higher US compensation will drive more jobs to low cost countries like India. If you cannot do then work of three or four indians...your job will be moved to India

If you’re not happy with 13.5, maybe you’d be happy with deez?

Well don't worry 13% - 8% inflation is just only 5%
your compensation is not accelerating
but indeed you do have job insecurity to cope with

To the guy who thinks these problems are made up:

The company is absolutely trying to get people to quit in some locations. It enables outsourcing, and circumvents Union negotiations and packages.

Secondarily, the gross incompetence of the company makes people WANT to quit. Have you ever tried to fix a Salary and Benefit problem? After hours of gaslighting, you will either think the company has it-in-for-you or is about to collapse based on gross incompetence.

Finally ‘do the right thing’ is entirely absent from vocabulary when it comes to personnel. If the choice is between an OPEX dollar and ‘doing the right thing’ the opex dollar wins. Now, all escalation chains end with a guillotine. Escalation is a fake process for someone a could management levels up to officially tell you ‘no.’

@1ysh The tech sector doesn’t usually hire from the energy sector. People in O&G don’t have the skills they’re looking for. A few people in a few companies were working with ML for specific applications and got picked up. They had masters degrees and knew at least two programming languages. Same for developers.

Again, wishful thinking.

Most ppl who left from emre to tech companies didn’t get a 50% raise….they got double or triple what they were getting paid at Exxon….that’s what happens when you have transferable skills.

@1itr You’re missing the point.

People post about their monetary fantasies here all of the time. The most recent one making the rounds is that a company that is actively trying to get people to quit is dolling out double-digit raises.

Before this, everyone was posting about getting hired on at a “tech company” for a 50% pay increase. Another ridiculous fantasy, as most people working at Exxon have all they can do to reboot their PC to finish installing a service-patch.

As to the tech-sector layoffs, it was mostly middle-managers and HR. Hiring freezes are more common. Yes we got bonuses. Yes we make more than you. Yes we’re all younger. Life is not that bad.

If Exxon did what Elon did, all of you would be standing in a breadline.

Ask all those recently laid off tech sector people if there is such a thing as job security. The company cannot and does not give job security. But if you work hard and smart and make the company alot of money. YOU create job security for yourself. If you are unsure of a career in XOM or the oil industry, please QUIT and then go see what job security exists in the open market

@OP You didn’t get a 13.5% raise. This goes in the same bucket with all the other lies of commission routinely told on this board.

At least people stopped posting about securing 50% pay raises after going to work for “tech companies”. Talk about living in fantasy-land.

I'd take a high raise over anything else.

Lower raise does not mean lower job security.
