Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Forcing people out has not stopped

If someone thinks that EM stopped forcing people out, I think they are wrong. It may not be so obvious anymore, but I know many examples of people who were put under so much pressure that they literally had to leave in order to save their health, and they were good and hard-working employees.

@2lta Or, they could just pull a GE and freeze pension contributions, which happened back in 2018. Basically, all the over-50s were told “stay if you want to, but you’re not getting anything more for it”.

EM has been borrowing heavily from the GE playbook, so don’t be surprised if they go through with something similar.

In general, nobody gets better at anything after age 55 anyway, unless they’re a science fiction writer or painter or something. There’s a reason why viagra is a thing.

ExxonMobil would love it if every employee left before age fifty-five, which is the minimum age to receive 75% of your pension.

@2ezu

They don’t care. Neither does any other employer.

The employer/employee relationship is transactional. It is not altruistic. Long screeds about morals and values just don’t mean anything in the context of corporate employment.

If you’re unhappy, move on. It’s that simple.

Making the working environment so unpleasant is definitely one way to get people to leave, but it is short sided and not good business. It will take quite a few years to see the full impact of the poor decisions made the last few years. The forced retirements and bogus PIPs in 2020 were catastrophic, not only for morale and trust in the company, but our corporate reputation. Everything has gone downhill since.

It’s both funny and sad that our execs have the ba--s to claim will still attract the cream of the crop when everyone knows that’s a lie. It just makes us look out of touch and shady.

I’m retiring on my birthday because of how toxic the place is now. I used to love it here. Now, I have an ulcer because of how everyone behaves. The complete lack of respect for everyone and anyone has created an environment of negativity that wasn’t there in the past. I hope it changes, but I won’t be around to see it.

@1nzg

Or…..

You can just stop whining. Or move on. Or both.

@1kwx+1k5CpsmD, if you want people to “give it a rest”, I fear you are in the wrong place. This is a site for people to post about their company and possible layoffs.

I’m sure there are plenty of pro layoff sites you can visit. Since it’s free market/free country/don’t like it/move on. As you said, it’s not complicated.

@1qnq Good. The sooner the better. Enjoy your retirement.

I'm retiring earlier than I wanted to just because of all the gaslighting that goes on here. If they would just be honest and do regular layoffs and severance packages everyone would be better off, including the company. I guess they just like to torture people before they leave. It's pretty sick in my opinion.

“Forcing people out has not stopped”

Can we please give this a rest?

Nobody is “forcing” anyone to do anything. Free market/free country/don’t like it/move on. It’s not complicated.

The problem seems to be that a lot of the people who have checked-out and retired in place (most of you) either don’t see or won’t admit that it is long past time for them to pursue other endeavors.

Ergo, both you and Exxon will continue to make each other miserable. By sheer mass Exxon will eventually win, and you’ll eventually go, and they know it. They’ll just keep turning up the temperature until you melt. This is how power operates.

The ones who have left have not had competent people to backfill their roles, adding more work for the remaining overloaded, overworked and overstressed already. Recipe for workplace heart attacks for those who are retirement eligible which haven't left yet, though should have.
