The most important thing is to keep your skillset current in order to be marketable because there is no longer any job security here. However, in my case it is not so simple because it is almost impossible to keep skills up to date while not using them at work here. How do you manage to keep your skills sharp in that situation?

Pursuing certifications where you have to pass a test can force you to have the knowledge where you could do well in technical interviews. Lots of online training options with labs. You just have to be willing to put in the time on these consistently.
Shift gears and find another niche, something you're good at and could make money doing it! Corporate America is not the answer, it's the problem! Years ago when I started with T back in the 80s, T was the place to work and retire just like any major fortune 100 company. Not anymore, it's become the pits and the youth of today see that far better than the old timers. There's no loyalty, devotion or desire to stay with a company longer than 2-3 years at a time and rightfully so! I envy these youngsters fresh out of college! They're more about life and happiness and not so much dedication to the job.
Keep focusing on current tasks.
You just quit and find another job where your skills are relevant.
