Layoffs Q1?

How likely is it since 3,000 were let go in August, followed by only 1,000 electing to retire? The 8,000 number leaked earlier is still not met.

JF doesn’t know how to fix it so his solution is to build a whole new team in Mexico and then dismiss the US team. But since the problem is the leadership team, they are rebuilding the same set of problems.

In software engineering you could always spot the incompetents, they were the guys who could never fix existing software, and instead declared that everything needed to be thrown away and rewritten. Yes sometimes the existing software needed to be scrapped but unless the guy could present evidence that he truly understood the software he wanted to rewrite from scratch, I hired a replacement and showed the guy the door.

@8qra, I see it as "all of the above". The long running bad management approaches have led to janky designs, sub-par engineering, and terrible quality. When management clearly expresses that they don't want hear bad news ("just get the job done") from the chains reporting up to them while concurrently wanting to look like the greatest thing since sliced bread & the horseless carriage thus presenting their "fertilizer" as a gold-plated solution, it leads to a total disconnect from reality. Those who were here when Mr. Mulally was brought in may recall that after several months of "all green, no reds" report traffic lights being presented to them he made it clear that he wanted and needed to hear about what wasn't going well rather than presented the illusion that everything is fine all the time.

When top management doesn't get told that a design has inherent flaws they can't direct mid-management to address those. When mid-management doesn't get told that the engineering of certain aspects isn't going well or is lacking coordination with other "silos" things get released in a sub-par state. And when the design is flawed, and the engineering is sub-par, the quality is going to suffer regardless of how well the people on the line are putting things together.

I believe it's too late now, but what we really needed after AM retired was another good "manager who came up through the engineering ranks" with a focus on hearing about challenges and bad news early as possible so that they could be addressed before getting baked into the product. It takes years to decades to improve the general public's impression of quality & value in a company, and only one or two poor quality products being released to convince them that a company turns out crud.

Ford problem is not engineering or quality or design. It's bad management.
I worked 3 years at Ford and don't miss a single day.

The executives did leave on their own terms. The type of people that Ford makes executives are greedy selfish politicians. Not one of them give a damn about the long term future of Ford, just how to maximize their personal wealth. As soon as they saw that their massive pensions would be damaged by the interest rate changes they were out and buying houses in the villages FL so they could continue the BS of who hangs out with who at their prestigious golf clubs.

Name one project from Ford Next that is successful and bringing in profits or at least revenue. YOU CAN’T. That is why you see a lot of comments about FLV and his team of losers.

Why do so many comments here criticize Franck Louis-Victor of Ford Next? You do realize that the word "next" is in the organizations name? That means that the projects from his team are not going to be in our vehicles near term. These projects are long-term and are a key part of our company transformation into the digital space.

Be patient, and look forward to bringing these new features to market via Model e.

Eventually Ford will realize that ICE vehicles will need to be around longer and/or at higher volumes than originally thought. Once they do, hopefully they will not have gotten rid of all the critical resources required to support this.

The layoffs won't just be Q1. The sales numbers show that blood letting is coming. The truck and SUV sales will continue to languish. The EVs will continue to show growth. the problem? There is no margin in the EVs. UAW rules shield the hourly employees, so it will be continued layoffs of the NA salaried work force. I'd put no stock in the 8000 number. I think the target is at least double that! I don't think Bill will rest until the glass house is the only building in NA that houses salaried employees, and all of the work is either contracted to other companies (can you say Google?), or in low cost countries. They didn't build the huge development center in Mexico to have it sit empty.

The push to EVs will continue to cause the workforce to shrink. Especially considering Ford's debt to cash ratio. $139 billion to ~$25 billion. And that second number continues to shrink as the first number continues to grow. So their only lever is salaried employees and the costs associated with them.

Next year will be brutal. The lucky ones got SIRP'd this year while their were still jobs to be had. Next year it will be 12 job seekers for every 1 job opening. Maybe even worse than that.

Doom and gloom is the only outlook. But what is coming will make 2009 look like child's play.

The new EV programs do not need all of the PD support once needed for ICE programs and the ICE personal skillsets are not that easily transferable.

Who to cut next?! Plenty of LL4/3/2's with expiring contracts! Farley is not happy with Louis-Victor and the horrific results out of Ford Next. Bled 2 billion!!!!!!!!! and have nothing to show! Look at all the groups that had people moved out or re-org'd. First round of PEPs happening end of Q1, by summer should have another 1000 ' separated. ' Sadly, whoever is left that's pension eligible will also be gone. Lots of admin seem very concerned, they know who's on Farley's s*it list. Dont be fooled by the EV smokescreen, Ford has for decades been preaching commitment to EVs, nothing more than a way to cull NA ranks. Lots of hiring and dev happening south of the border. Also, lots of design redundancies, ' design thinking ' groups will be cut. Going to be a rough '23!

Anyone see signs of figuring out who to cut next? (Optional in-person meetings to see who shows up, executing a calling tree to see who responds and participating in skip level meetings?). They are trying to figure out which persons/positions are important.

Nobody is safe unless you’re friends with some higher-up LL’s. Apply around and leave on your own terms instead of being forced out against your own will.
