Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Moving abroad

I currently live in the US and have a corporate position at VZ, technically deemed hybrid, but I'm totally remote. Question is, can I move to Europe and maintain my employment or are there laws that prohibit me from working at VZ in another country?

If you deal with government data, the answer is no. If you only deal with commercial data, you could work from another country for 1+ month and no one would know a thing. Been there done that.

Why would you ask a layoff page this question? Why not go to HR or a government agency? Do you really trust an anonymous source on this page?

Unfortunately not (mainly bec there are tax implications for the company). This is a big issue for all companies and it has been brought up to the leadership a number of times. I think in the near future, you may get a month's max allowance to "work from anywhere".

There are still restrictions on handling company assets (laptops) and accessing equipment from Europe. Access requires APPROVAL. Proceed at your own risk.

Permanently? No. Semi-temporarily? Probably.

Set up Wireguard or something on a VPS here in the states. Be prepared to work at least Eastern Time Zone hours (which sucks abroad, I've done it).

Would I do it for a long time? Probably not. A summer? Sure, I think you could get away with it. But forever? Not worth the squeeze.

Not gonna fly. You might get away with another state since VZ has nexus in all 50 but even that is a tax situation HR needs to know about.

I know someone in wireline that worked from Italy during the summer and it wasn’t an issue. Depends on how long.

Discuss with your leadership. If you truly wish to remain employed by Vz look into positions that are open in the country you plan to settle in. Then if you are hired into that position you can be transferred. That's the correct way to do it. You cannot retain your current job and live in a different country.

You can’t even do this on vacation. Get a new job.

The company logs your IP address (ISP and location) every time you connect your company issued laptop to the network. You will be violating code of conduct and get fired if caught.

As mentioned by a prior poster, there are regulations and US Federal laws that prohibit you from working remotely in a foreign country. We have team members in Ireland and that is even an issue. It requires a lot of legal involvement and then you have the security concerns. Note that using a VPN as suggested by someone else is also a major no as many VPNs found on the internet do and can monitor your traffic and that is another exposure that if you are caught can lead not just to being fired but to legal issues for you. You are best to have that discussion with your leadership and HR. Do it the right way and avoid losing your job and having legal issues.

I retired in 2018, but before then there were policies regarding taking company property out of the United States when traveling, either for business or on vacation. If I remember correctly some of the policies and procedures were controlled by Corporate Security. A simple search on eWeb for foreign travel requirements should provide insight. There are also governmental regulations regarding taking computer, cell phone and security encryption equipment offshore.

Don’t you think at some point they will ask you to report to the office? You think remote work will last forever ? Companies are starting to demand employees come to the office. It’s just a matter of time before you need to find a new job.
