Now add IBM to the list....
@130 What's with the hieroglyphics? Are they supposed to mean something?
@nz it is still ringing for native americans. only if you are a foreigner.
| They're not going to want that negative press right after a major competitor.
They'll just fly under the radar, like they always do. There might be a small story in The Register about the layoffs, but it won't make the major headlines.
Saw this headline. Draw your own conclusions:
"Amazon says it didn’t cut 14,000 people because of money. It cut them because of ‘culture’ "
@nn Speaking of pivots, the IT job market sure did a 180. About 3 years ago my phone was ringing nearly nonstop with calls from recruiters. About two years ago it pivoted to silence.
IT as a career is done. Too many job losses and too many people fighting for the same Job posting.
As AI get more implemented in different job roles, more layoffs will follow and more companies will rush towards implementing AI and follow the playbook from other companies.
Future of IT and software is bleak. Pivot is the only option.
@dd , you are right. its best for everyone to pivot than just looking in IT industry alone.
Currently there are 300,000 job openings in various industries due to building manufacturing plants nationwide. Supply chain, logistics, warehousing, head hunters, construction, suppliers, project managers, I T, commercial real estate, housing, recreation, retail the list is long including startups.
Jobs can be found. Creativity in search might help.
Looks like China needs our business and manufacturers definitely need their raw materials. Economic forecast positive, just a major shift.
"Maybe interesting, but not Oracle news. Let's keep this channel clean and save stuff like this for https://www.thelayoff.com/amazon-com"
There are industry wide considerations!
"They're not going to want that negative press"
Don't get your hopes up. Oracle knows how to hide it.
All the people dancing around DT are letting people go ...
This will not end well!
@b9 This is what I'm thinking. I was planning on waiting till the new year to restart my search in earnest, but this news makes me redouble my search efforts. People are saying they've been interviewing and getting nowhere. INTERVIEWING?? I'm lucky I get rejection emails. 😭🙄
The biggest challenge is for Oracle employees who are already laidoff and in job market.
November and December they can't find job due to Holiday season. In Jan and Feb, they are going to face heavy competition with Amazon laidoff employees in market.
So people who got laidoff recently, please plan ahead and try to get in somewhere before your competition hits.
@ac good question. There are always restrictions in labor market. If 10 companies started laying off like this in parallel, the job market will be flooded and unemployment will be more.
This will affect economy of the country. So always countries have rules for layoffs like WARN act.
When Amazon or big company does layoff like this, other company will wait for theit turn.
more like round robin method. So Oracle employees will be safe for a while with risk of small layoffs in name of performance. not a massive.
Maybe interesting, but not Oracle news. Let's keep this channel clean and save stuff like this for https://www.thelayoff.com/amazon-com
A job is a job.
That is a lot of corporate folks !!
What would 10% at ORCL look like ?
Wow! Market saturated with people looking for jobs - it is getting seriously tougher now!!
@a7 I don’t understand your point here. Typically, investors are asking companies why they aren’t taking similar actions to the competitors. It’s more likely that Oracle uses this as cover fire to say “ we’re following with the market is doing.”
With Amazon doing these huge, mass layoffs, there's no way Oracle is going to hit the 'layoff' button for at least the next couple of months—maybe through January or February. They're not going to want that negative press right after a major competitor.
So, look, enjoy this window. If they do anything after the new year, it'll probably just be a small, typical 'performance review' cull, nothing massive.
Use this time. Seriously, put your head down and focus on interview prep. You can go into those interviews with confidence, knowing you've got a little breathing room.
