Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Why are there so many Senior Managers and Directors?

I just don't understand it. There are managers with no direct reports, layers and layers of managers who just sit around shopping on Amazon.

Never seen anything like it. The guy who said they're firing management is probably right because there are just way too many managers in this company

There are precisely 91 SVP’s in the company. Top heavy is an understatement.

The reason for ”all the 6V’s with no direct reports” is VSP and no one bothered to fix it.

When teams merged there was no rhyme or reason, the employees self selected to leave.

So now you’ve got a 6V (sr mgr) reporting to a 6V (sr mgr) reporting to a 6V (assoc dir). And two of them have no direct reports!

Look at all of the managers and directors in FP&A in Basking Ridge and start eliminating. Spending the day shopping online, spending hours each day in the Gym, and socializing all day.

Job titles and the span of control have been abused. Exceptions should be few and far between, not an epidemic. Nobody trusts the system. HR has failed us.

My ad only has 2 managers under him and only 15 individual contributors base pay of 175k to manage 2 people mind blowing!

They've gotten rid of lots of the directors at least in my part of the company. One of the biggest problem is like 70% of the individual contributors are band 6. It doesn't make sense to have the vast majority of your individuals at the highest individual level. Plenty of those jobs could be done by band 8 college grads or people with 2 years experience.

We should only have 5 management levels: Pres, Vice Pres, Director, Manager (second level), First level.

There is no need for Senior Manager, Exec Director, Senior VP, etc. These titles were invented so executives could get their friends/family high paying jobs with no/low responsibility.

There should be a minimum number of direct reports for each. For example, a Manager should have 15 direct reports. A Director should have 10 direct reports, etc. etc.

Our customers would appreciate and benefit from a streamlined management structure. It would be easier for them to contact us and resolve any major service issues.

Additionally, we would save a lot of money. More so than if we RIFd 10 or 15% of our First or Second level managers.

Nah, Many of the management is diverse so it would be bad optics to let them go. Mind you not that VZ actually gives a sh-t about diversity. They just want to look diverse.

When the layoffs hit in the fall I was certain they would get rid of a ton of senior managers and directors who don't do $h!t. Surprisingly they just got rid of everyone including them and their direct reports in some cases. I wouldn't be surprised if they get rid of a lot of managers this go around. There are so many who just do absolutely nothing.

Totally agree. There are teams and teams doing science projects without any real customers or any value to the company. Led by single manager or director over a bunch of offshore contactors. Captain Silly-man needs to do a wholesale sweep.
