It is legal to layoff during a leave of absence as long as the leave is not the reason for the layoff.
I'm pretty sure they have to wait for you to come back from a leave like that. My spouse told me (after the fact) I should have gone on a leave when SIRPS were rumored. At least I could have made it to my 30 years.
Anyone laid off on medical leave, especially someone 50+, should not sign the waiver. With Ford's record, a lawsuit has good chances.
